NCN41 Bristol

Post by Redvee »

A bit late with this but Lawrence Weston Road has been closed for the last few weeks for various improvements including lighting along the section from Merebank Road to M5 overbridge, resurfacing and stringing of pylon cables linking to Hinkley C. Other improvements include an upgrade of the crossing where Lawrence Weston Road meets Merebank Road which in time will have pelican lights.

Thanks, rv. There's another topic ongoing, on the subject of making edits in osm, so your own post is timely! Encouraged by other kindly posters, I managed to make a suitable change to the appropriate tags that I found that belong to the relevant short section of the Concorde Way, as the section will now be closed until spring of next year (and probably later...!) I've linked to the page on TravelWest website here: https://travelwest.info/projects/ashley-down-station/
Your annotated map showing the section of the NCN41 that's affected is useful - have you found anywhere a council or Sustrans web page that lists the closures and the proposed timetable? I only ask as it took me ages to find the relevant website to do with the Concorde Way closure. It's almost as if the authorities don't want to announce the closure too loudly in case folks notice and protest!

I only knew about the closure through a poster in work and a colleague mentioning it as he comes along that way. The timeline was from October 2021 to February 2023 but that has now passed so we reckon April 2023.

With my new-found knowledge of osm and how to edit the tags of a line, I now have the ability to mark the path as impassible. The problem will be knowing when to remove that value so that it appears open once more. I suppose I could rely on someone else doing that - after-all that's half the point of it being open source... I might potter out there today and have a look-see :-)

Back from recce - I think it would be helpful to update the NCN41 - although it was fairly intuitive to work out how to detour, that was only 'cos I have enough local knowledge to be aware of hlepful landmarks like the motorways and the hills of Kings/Lawrence Weston to work it out. A stranger might not be so blessed. I'll have a go at an edit later.
As an aside, I'd forgotten how totally carpeted Avonmouth & its environs is with glass fragments... the blinkin' stuff is everywhere. No p******es though :-)
Some recent visitors liked the route so much, it looks like they're intending to move in...

I was less than 100 yards from that photo location today :) I took a different route home on Sunday night up through Hallen and found a similar sized fly-tip, I did spend a few minutes browsing for clues as to where the fly-tip might have came from and found several boxes with the same address on. The last puncture I had in Avonmouth was from hedge trimming on the NCN path that is currently closed.
