Boot lace / cable end ratchet crimp in Lidls - £20 - any good for bikes?
I saw this in Lidls a few weeks ago and was wondering if it'd be any good for crimping cable ends on bikes instead of the more standard silver jobbies that often fall off after a bit? They haven't sold out but there aren't many left in my local. They crimp into a square shape (whereas octagonal would probably be aesthetically more pleasing). I also noted these are designed to attach to cables inside a housing whereas I suppose on bikes you'd be crimping direct onto the bare cable, so perhaps the attachment wouldn't be as durable.
PS I found the image through google, the £18 is from a previous year and is wrong - they are definitely £20 (thanks inflation!) but otherwise the same!
PPS The mods removed this by mistake so I have reinserted it.

£20 just for crimping cable end caps? Save your twenty quid and put it towards a pair of decent cable cutters ((such as these ones for cutting parallel strand gear cable outers).
The integral crimping dies also mean that you’ll take up less space in your toolbox with something - Park Tool have a similar offering - that does two jobs not just one.

Use long nose pliers and squeeze hard in a couple of places, then the cap won't fall off.

IMG_5413 by 531colin, on FlickrJust solder up the ends.
I use silver solder, because I have it knocking about, but you can use lead solder for stainless if you get the right flux.

I use mole grips. Once you get the adjustment correct they are quite effective

Couple of drops of superglue?
I use a little heatshrink
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

f I want to crimp alloy cable ends on, which I buy by the hundred, I might use the crimping bit of the cable cutters or I might just use the wire cutting bit of any old pair of pliers. Have used a chisel, the vice and even a knackered break barrel air rifle.

The bottles of super glue which have a little brush attached to the cap are just the job - Just drag the brush along the cable end, job done.
Particulary useful when fitting new cables into the Rohloff Ex box pulley. Those in the know will know what I mean.
