Will electric bicycles kill off non-electric bicycles?

At the risk of upsetting people, electric bikes are essentially mopeds.

No they're not. The legislation for bikes & e-bikes is very different to that of mopeds and e-mopeds. There's further legislation for the middle ground of s-pedelecs although legally they are classed as mopeds.
The operation / riding experience is very different too as is the matter of where you can ride them - mopeds can't (legally) be ridden on cycle paths for example.
I don't know if you're coming at it from the sort of "its not real cycling" or "it's cheating" angle but it's not accurate to say "they're basically mopeds". They're not at all.

In other words, a different animal to a regular push bike, and attracting people who would otherwise not be on a two wheeled thingamajig at all. So no threat.

Threat?! Threat to what?
Some sort of Golden Age of Pure Cycling? Threat that e-bikes might completely replace regular bikes?

e-bikes are fantastic enablers for people who might not be super fit to use bikes for short journeys they would otherwise do in a car, they're great for allowing mixed age/ability groups to ride together and in shared use environments (eg Lime / Dott dockless e-bikes), they're brilliant for opening up new transport options - that 1.5 mile walk to the station is just far enough to be annoying on foot but it's 5 minutes on a dockless bike or scooter.

E bikes and normal bikes 'are' different animals, both have their place both can be rewarding. They are not going threaten each others existence but they might change the mass markets.
