brake block direction

Post by Bluenose »

Aztec cantilver brake blocks have no directional arrow. Am I correct in thinking that the short length goes to the front in the direction of travel?

The instructions are mainly about the toe in of the block. What I mean is that the block is not symmetrical from the metal post. It has a short and a longer piece.

Short at the front is normal, in direction of travel as you say.

These are Koolstop, I don't think the make makes any difference.

Conventionally the short end is fitted towards the front of the bike. I believe that this is to ensures that the longer rearmost projection of the brake block is trailing with respect to forward wheel rotation. The longer rear projection is better able to resist twisting of the brake arm under braking and, together with correct toe in, promotes even pad wear.

It's more important to get this right on replaceable shoe type brake blocks. On this types the short end will also coincide with the closed end of the shoe and it's essential that this end is to the font of the bike to prevent the blocks ejecting under braking
