And the last verse (of the better known cover) could be interpreted as a road safety message!colin54 wrote: ↑26 Mar 2023, 9:19pm Or as Stevie might have rhymingly put it, Pastime Paradise...

We've been spending most of our lives lugging pastime Carradice.
Re: ...how Carradice is pronounced?
How do you pronounce "prejudice"?
Or "injustice" or "precipice" or "liquorice" or "armistice"?
Let alone "apprentice" or "accomplice" or "service"?
I would suggest that there are hundreds of them.

Re: ...how Carradice is pronounced?
There are no hard and fast rules in the pronunciation of English.
One new oddity which irritates me is that 'harass' and 'embarass' no longer rhyme.
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

Most of them are from French from Latin, including possibly all of those.
As above Carradice seems to have come from Scotland but I suspect that it's of Celtic origin rather than from the Germanic Scots.

Re: ...how Carradice is pronounced?
Is that because of people putting the emphasis on the first syllable of harass and pronouncing the second vowel as a short a rather than a schwa?Mike Sales wrote: ↑27 Mar 2023, 10:29am ...

Re: ...how Carradice is pronounced?
Is there a mono/poly syllabic split here, or is that purely coincidental?
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those can extrapolate from incomplete data.

Re: ...how Carradice is pronounced?
It might not be coincidental if there's anything in those different origins.

Re: ...how Carradice is pronounced?
I used to pronounce it to rhyme with "niche" so something like "meesh". But then I learnt that it's an Italian company, not French, so I suppose it would be "meekay". But that sounds a bit silly in English. Similarly Campagnolo: do you pronounce it with the gn as ñ, or with the g and n separately, or ignore the g? All have their adherents, all are wrong, all are right.
