More to the point, would you extend that principle of pronouncing names as they are said in their language of origin to
a) names from languages you don't know?
and b) names which are taken from a language other than the language of the company in question (eg Panaracer is a Japanese firm but the name is derived from English)?

Don't get onto the Mitsubishi Starion controversy.
Meanwhile, is controversy pronounced con-trovv-ersy, or contro-versy?

Usually, it’s pronounced:
Ar-tif-ish-alli Jen-er-aytid st-awm in a tee-kup.

Re: ...how Carradice is pronounced?
For companies and recent individuals I try to pronounce them as a native speaker would. Nestlé, Porsche, Hyundai. This often invokes ridicule when we turn to flatpack furniture.Bmblbzzz wrote: ↑27 Mar 2023, 2:55pm More to the point, would you extend that principle of pronouncing names as they are said in their language of origin to

Carradice themselves say car-a-dice, which is how I've always said it. It does sound Lancastrian if you say it that way.
Re: ...how Carradice is pronounced?
And the name, according to this site at least, has a Scots origin: https://www.houseofnames.com/carradice- ... 20Stewarts.
The pronunciation of "car" in the video is exactly how "car" (brum brum) would be said in that area of Lancashire.
Re: ...how Carradice is pronounced?
Yes, as discussed upthread. But that's not Scots as in the current language of that name. Strathclyde Britons in present day Scotland would have been speaking a Celtic language.pwa wrote: ↑27 Mar 2023, 3:45pm ...

I'm a Lancastrian, from heritage, upbringing, and schooling. Flat vowels, Wigan accent, the lot. This is despite being in the RN and living in Cornwall for nearly 40 years.
It's carra-diss to me .......... ee by gum!

Having no idea how Koreans pronounce Hyundai, I googled and found this:Jdsk wrote: ↑27 Mar 2023, 3:31pmFor companies and recent individuals I try to pronounce them as a native speaker would. The last one in the video is LG, which is especially interesting as not only is it initials, those initials are from Lucky-Goldstar. So it's quite a good illustration of the "native speaker of which language?" issue.
Re: ...how Carradice is pronounced?
Hyundai are running an advertising campaign promoting a preferred pronunciation. Brave.
