Latest immigration ploy!
Did I hear it right? They're suggesting using ferries to store immigrants / asylum seekers on instead of hotels.
If there's any ferries going spare send them up to Scotland, the Scottish government needs all the help it can get supplying the ferries it needs. Surely there's more hotel spaces than ferry spaces anyway.

It would be so much easier to just process their claims properly.
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

Great Expectations is on TV again so it is appropriate to revive the hulks. Will we see Magwitchs on the Essex Marshes again?Tangled Metal wrote: ↑27 Mar 2023, 4:41pm Did I hear it right? They're suggesting using ferries to store immigrants / asylum seekers on instead of hotels.

1) It would involve helping the applicants. The purpose of government policy is to aggressively show how much they hate these people, so it would defeat the purpose of the policy.
2) It would involve hard work, application, patience and persistence. Whereas our government is capable of only chasing short term headlines and literally nothing else.
Both of these are set by the highest leadership in the country.

The SNP are already housing Ukrainians in ships. One in Edinburgh. One in Glasgow. Why not ferries? What else once we run outofhotel rooms?

A more disgaceful, disgusting, selfcentred set of politrickal tw@tts you could ever lay eyes upon, that is the present Conservative excuse for government.
How anyone can ever support such a disgraceful political party is beyond me!

Magwitch and his fellow convicts were kept in the hulks before their transportation to Botany Bay, so this is history repeated.

What? The ones they keep putting out of action by any chance? Don't tell me the ones that can fix the ships get to stayin the UK at useful ppl but the others get a bad time until they get sent to Rwanda?
If the SNP have ships free to do that why not using as ferries to arran and other places that are limping along with ancient ferries that are decades past retirement instead of migrant hulks?

HMP Weare was a prison ship in Portland for about four years till about 2006. I was faintly amused when l read it was refurbished to house oil workers in Nigeria and would accommodate 500 rather than the 400 prisoners it had held.

Agreed but it doesn't suit the government's agenda. Keep it in the news as a threat and they keep those that voted for them stoked up and likely be voting Tory next time.
Failure to make any planning on how to deal with legitimate asylum seekers was deliberate and is shameful.
I have sympathy with people who see the asylum seekers getting priority if their own housing is very poor and unaffordable. Their anger shouldn't be towards the newcomers but successive governments that have failed them.

Re: Latest immigration ploy!
The use of hotels is a poor option anyway. It isn't great for those housed that way, and it deprives small tourism-dependent communities of tourists, with adverse effects on other businesses nearby. Three things are needed to get a grip on this. Firstly, a process for claiming asylum that can be accessed in France and other non-UK locations. Secondly, greater capacity in claim processing. And thirdly, a programme of building to provide decent medium term accommodation. The latter should be alongside a much larger programme of building social housing for established UK residents, to counter narratives about foreigners jumping the queue for homes.
