The Segway - anyone ridden one?

Post by simonineaston »

A group is going to Rome later on this year. We've booked a Segway tour. I'd forgotten all about them. Anyone ever ridden one?

Yes, one if my children gave the family an off-road session as a present.

Great fun.

When I see people riding those things it makes me think I’m in some alternative reality where real life and dreams have swapped places. just can’t work out the physics, you see.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

Saw them in Barcelona and was dubious about how easy they were to ride, we got chatting to the tour organiser and he let me have a quick spin on one for a few minutes.

My sister injured her knee falling off one. But she isn't one of life's athletes.

Yes. They don't look right, and the mechanical design isn't inherently stable. The stability is *added by the electronic control system, and that isn't visible.

After a couple of minutes on one I explored the envelope. The control system removes all of the drama!

This story, which got a lot of press in Yorkshire at the time, is ironic.
