Doesnt really surprise me  Anyway we are out of the EU something ordinary people voted for. The establishment and most of academia will have to get over it...

Al
I think the people having to get over it are particularly those who voted for it.

With, as this report shows, a lot more bureaucracy, on top of less wealth, a lot more immigration, less trade, less money for the NHS.

All the exact opposite of what were told they voted for.

This and many other agreements should have been part of Brexit negotiations. Unfortunately there was an abject failure to conclude negotiations on our side

Anyone with any common sense within both the EU and UK could see what needed to be done following the Brexit vote, but personal power and political interests got in the way here
And the next low-hanging fruit could be (re)joining Erasmus+.

Thanks Jonathan
Why the flop/s this couldn't have been negotiated years ago is beyond me.
I know! We'd have been unable to start building 350 new hospitals on 31st January 2020 :x

Would be interested to hear from supporters of Brexit if 100,000 more civil servants was what they wanted.
I don't know how the figure was determined, I haven't read the article, but UK Border Force (UKBF) are both civil servants and warranted officers.

It seems entirely logical to me that many of our pre and post-Brexit border woes, as one example, would have been far-better managed with more UKBF, rather than housing a few hundred refugees on a barge or none at all in Rwanda.

Talk about a sunk-cost fallacy!

Basically to try and diminish the flow of refugees

Overall, the number of civil servants has increased by around 100,000 since Brexit. That is not all attributable to Brexit – the responses to the Covid-19 pandemic and asylum claims have also driven numbers up – but most of the changes from 2016-2020 can be put down to Brexit, which was the major preoccupation of the government for that period.

Would be interested to hear from supporters of Brexit if 100,000 more civil servants was what they wanted.

Civil service has also increased proportion of employees in London. Again, was a relative increase in London spending what you wanted?

What a waste.
IIRC the government were planning to recruit 80,000 staff to deal with customs checks etc. , which is more than the entire number of EU bureaucrats in Brussels. How much did we send to Brussels? 10 billion net contribution. Loss to the taxpayer from brexit 40 billion.

The recent trade data are from the regular UNCTAD report:
https://unctadstat.unctad.org/datacentr ... rvicesBpm6

The economic effects of the UK Leaving the EU are currently about as predicted. Unless anyone can find a serious analyst referring to "stepping off a cliff".

Not specifically. Time you answered some questions. For a start why are you always trying to run the UK down?

Somerset was probably the location for the next Tesla factory before they chose not to build it in the UK.

And it's worth reviewing what happened to Britishvolt.
Today's rumours include £500M of subsidy:
https://www.theguardian.com/business/20 ... lant-in-uk

Of course production in the UK would directly affect the tariffs related to the rules of origin in the TCA. But it won't reduce the pressure to shift the dates of increment because they're due before there'll be significant production from this factory. If it's built.
It won't be:

Could the proposal be challenged on the basis that it is age discriminatory?
That being illegal in many areas.
Ps.
Oh dear they already refused to countenance it.
Sad and sadder.

Ignoring that UK Gov. has already reacted in true Brexit manner, age discrimination was my first reaction but probably because I want it as well. But blocking it for youngsters would not broaden it to include everyone (at least not yet).

But were it to happen for youngsters it would be the first step. Then, once public accept it works it could be broadened, maybe to a year for everybody else. Then 2 years ... we have freedom of movement.

Only big negatives is we'd be getting a lot of Farange & Braverman & Pritti Patel all over our TVs crying over all sorts of irrelevances.
