All Together Now...

Trust you're all readying your vocal chords for the coronation......

"The public will be given an active role in the ceremony for the first time, with people around the world set to be asked to cry out and swear allegiance to the King.

This "homage of the people" replaces the traditional "homage of peers" where hereditary peers swear allegiance to the new monarch. Instead everyone in the Abbey and watching at home will be invited to pay homage in what Lambeth Palace described as a "chorus of millions"." (BBC News)

I'll settle for the crying bit.....

I was just going to post the same thing, I thought it was a joke at first!
There won't be any pledging from me and I suspect not much from the rest of the public either

I had to check a few times to make sure that it wasn't. Or at least not a deliberate joke.

"I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God."

Please could someone have a go at explaining what "true allegiance" means. How would you know if someone was paying it or not from their behaviour?

And what are people who don't think that there is a God supposed to cry out?

Thanks

Jonathan

Which would also men pledging allegance to Andrew (Duke of York)...

Maybe the relevant word is "pay" £££££ (as in I swear that I will pay ...).

Best comment so far today:

In a democracy it is the head of state who should swear allegiance to us.

There are 56 states in the Commonwealth. He's King of only 15.

Certainly several of those have stated they intend referenda to decide and given the polls in those countries it would seem likely they'll abandon our monarchy.

Maybe it's about time we had a referendum, it would be interesting to see the results!

I hope the "question" a little more sophisticated than Brexit.
"Do you want a Monarchy?" Y/N.
"Do you support the continuation of a feudal system whereby you are the property of a King or Queen who supports the the Protestant version of Christianity?" Y/N.
"Who would you like to replace King Charles,? Choose from one of....."

Endless fun!!

The trouble is the Royals are not very employable in that they have no experience of workplace or real world. So maybe a number of referendums over a long period of time about whether or not they should have certain powers. e.g. 1st referendum "Should the King have the right to secretly modify legislation for his family's personal benefit?" Y/N

Then let the dust settle for 5 years and another "Should the Royal Family be subject to the same taxes as other UK taxpayers?" Y/N

etc.

I already have sworn allegiance, back in the 1980s when I attested to join the RAF because of the 'her Heirs and Successors' bit. By that means there are hundreds of thousands, probably millions, of ex- and currently serving miltary personnel, civil servants, and all sorts of others who have too

"I, Gravity Boy (I was a lot younger then ! ), Swear by Almighty God that I will be Faithful and bear True Allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, her Heirs and Successors, and that I will, as in Duty bound, Honestly and Faithfully Defend Her Majesty, her Heirs and Successors, in Person, Crown and Dignity against all Enemies and will Observe and Obey all Orders of Her Majesty, her Heirs and Successors, and of the Air Officers and other Officers set over me."

I remember signing the form of attestation to say I agreed to all the above but I don't think I signed anything to refute it when I left.

Presumably if you swear by 'Almighty God' but don't actually believe in one it must invalidate the oath.
