Did mine in about a month ago and been wearing the Vacoped boot for a week. Next hospital
appt in 3 weeks and no advice about exercises that might help the recovery.
Been doing upper body stuff with those resistance bands to help crutches use but scared to go below the waist, an advice would be very welcome or am I too soon?

You should have been given advice on appropriate exercise and I’d keep nagging until I had.

There’s a lot of advice on this from NHS sources. Which hospital is it?

Hi Bob,

If you haven't found the site already there is a lot of good advice on this website, it's nice being able to compare your progress and problems with others at the same stage of recovery. It may also help you prepare questions for your next hospital visit.
Good luck with the recovery.

Thanks all, not given any exercises on the 25th April, just the boot fitted and only got physio appt today and thats not till the 23rd May! Had to fight for the daily injections too because I left the decision for 3 days so I passed some deadline! Wasnt keen on injecting myself because I only lost sight in one eye in Feb and still knock things over !
Had three lots of hospital beds delivered too😲
( Its Aintree Hospital btw)
Cheers
Bob

Here's the Patient Information Leaflet from the Royal Devon and Exeter which covers the use of the VACOped boot:

"Achilles Tendon Injuries: Expected Management and Rehabilitation Times":
https://www.rdehospital.nhs.uk/media/jn ... 53-001.pdf

If Aintree don't have anything similar to offer how about asking them if this is appropriate?

I'd try and get an email address or similar for the physiotherapists so that you can discuss process between visits.

Out of interest I think that Devon and Exeter were one of the first NHS hospitals to trial a Vacoped style recovery, prior to that you would have been in plaster for a lot longer.

I've often wondered what the process is for ensuring that this sort of research gets rolled out.

How long have you got? : - )

For the research itself there's the whole hierarchy of evidence-based medicine up to systematic review. With this sort of technology that includes health technology assessments (HTAs).

Then there's promotion by the suppliers.

And education by professional societies and others. And guidelines and professional standards ditto.

And for the NHS in England there's NICE looking at effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. That works more quickly if there's already an HTA.

Thanks for the info, I'll leave that discussion now as I don't want to derail Bob's thread.
