I used to live in Falkirk and commuted to Stirling University most days on a bike. (12 miles but often extended to use quiet lanes). I never had any problems (other than weather!) And found drivers there more considerate than those in London ( and I won't comment on doing much the same in Singapore). But don't use a fixed wheel - the hills are invariably short, sharp shocks.
