Trigger's Broome eh?
Bikes are always like that.
Buy a frame, and fit what you want to it. Change what you want as bits wear out.
Not that the Moulton bits wore out, but they were crap IMHO.
Badly designed bike in the first place but the frame is ok ............. though heavy.

I just realised that my rear carrier was customised by the frame builder to fit the frame. I may be the only person in the world who has a Blackburn SS-1 with the arms bent upwards. He also customised the Sanyo Dynapower to fit a mounting plate on the frame. Those things used to collect crud even faster than sidewall dynamos. Thank goodness for neodymium magnets which made efficient and powerful hub dynamos possible, and blue LEDs which made bright efficient lights possible.

Yet another post that divides us into groups.
I am not complaining actually about this. Humans group. I find it fascinating.
Newest bike in the household is the wifes ebike. That lasted a whole week before I swapped stems, pedals, and added a Brooks. Most definitely the least altered* bike we have.
*Surely a much better word .
Yeah absolutely, I would hate to call what I do 'customisation'. To do so, seems abit insulting to the talents, visions and skills of my teenage heroes, John Reed, Ed Roth, Chris Ireland (Desperate Dan's Customs) and Crazy Odgie (Anthill Customs) all of whom had the skills and intelligence that I could not hope to attain.

Same as for a car
By customizing do you mean from a bike as stock, changing bits to suit your taste appearance wise, or changing bits to suit how you would like it to fit/work/ride, or a mix of the two?
My own answer to that question would probably that I mainly build a bike out of bits that suit the function and riding style that I like. If the parts match/go together well aesthetically then that's a bonus. I hardly have any bikes that are all of mostly original spec, probably the closest is my road bike, and that's still had loads of bits changed!
I'm about to convert an old rigid Marin mountain bike into a general purpose/heavy touring bike, and nothing will survive apart from the frame! I feel a bit bad about it because it's a lovely looking bike as it is, but all of the lovely looking color coordinated bits are coming off!

Can we expect before & after photographs?

Here are some befores:
The afters will probably be ages if my past projects are anything to go by. It seems a real shame but all of the purple stuff will go, including the fork and lovely stem.
It will end up something like this:

I see no problem with the question.
I have customized our two bikes
DMR coloured handlebars, stems, + seat posts, horns (air), crud catchers, coloured grips and so on

Yep the disc brakes on those bikes seem to be on the drive side. But handlebars are the correct.
I think the forks are the wrong way around.

I'm guessing names like Indian Larry, Ed Roth, Kenny Howard Von Dutch, mean absolutely nothing to you?

That purple one is lovely.
