2023 TDF potential spoliers- watch the latest stage before reading

Now we have something / quite-a-lot to discuss and celebrate.

I'm imagining that if you type the podcast name (or a decent approximation) into your pc search engine of choice it will pull up a list of links from which you could either stream or download the mp3 files.

Mark Cavendish quits

14:48

Mark Cavendish is in the ambulance. He abandons his 14th and last Tour de France. For the 7th time, he won't reach Paris. He'll remain the record holder of stage wins on pair with Eddy Merckx (34) for now.

Hope he comes back for one more race, just so he can finish his career by crossing a finish line.

Astana are going to offer him another chance. I think he'd need a stronger team.

I wonder if he'll be tempted. Unfinished business?

I would guess he won’t but as the commentators said- you’re a long time retired.

As for Astana I think he’s done then a lot of good- they’ve felt a bit out of the main tours recently and they’ve had lots of good publicity with Cav.

Good day today. Definitely looking forward to our ride up- on the funicular.
So much climbing for a first week.

Chapeau to Woods and to Jorgensen.

Pog or Vingegaard? Dunno- starting to look like it might go Pog’s way.

I don't think he'll accept the offer from Astana but I'd love it if he did.
Cav has been on form this year and has put a huge amount of effort into getting in peak condition for the tour. Would he want to do this again, I'm not sure but the lure of that stage win must be very tempting.
Too close to call on Pog or Vinegaard.
The Yates brothers are having a good tour, be nice if one of them managed to get on the Podium in Paris.

Should be a good weekend in the mountains. I’m working from home today- better get plenty done early.

Anyone else think the bonus seconds for 1st, 2nd and 3rd are perhaps unbalanced, 10, 6 and 4 seconds, so 1st gains 4 seconds on 2nd who gains 2 seconds on 3rd, who gains 4 seconds on 4th.

It seems that on today's stage, if Pogacar and Vingegaard had finished stronger and both passed Van Gils so they finished 2nd and 3rd, Pogacar would gain 2 fewer seconds for finishing in a better position. Maybe 10, 5, 2 would be better.

Good foreshadowing given the events of the day!

Obviously if I were Pogacar today I would have let Adam Yates have a little rest then let him start his sprint, and then followed then beaten Vingegaard, making up two more seconds by finishing third instead of second. :D

But I would have collected the bonus seconds at the top of the Joux plane.

With another incident with a m/c, this time Pogacar's sprint, I wonder if technology could help. Of course we all love the views of the riders' faces battling it out but would it not be possible to use a drone in some way?
Maybe have the pilot on a m/c but further ahead.
I'm sure it's not straightforward but drones are used and developed for all sorts of things.
Just feeling Pogacar was let down by the film crew.

Drones are used in TV coverage of mountain bike races, and have been used in cyclocross, but both of those are in a relatively small area with some control of where the spectators are.
On a TdF col, where the motorbike was a problem, you wouldn't want to risk a drone crash like on this ski race (Youtube).

There's also the problem of flying time and picture transmission range, so any coverage would be for fairly limited and pre-selected sections, which is OK for a circuit race (as in MTB/CX), but wouldn't be as effective in a point to point road race.

Anyhow, Pog was blocked by photographer motos (why were there two?) rather than a TV bike.

Felt decisive today. Not the result I wanted and I’m surprised by the gap but I thought that might be the way things would go in this round of Pog v Ving. Obviously it’s not the end but there would need to be a dramatic turnaround now.
