Dog Free Cycle Routes

Post by Stozza80 »

Hi everyone, as a family we’ve really been bitten by the cycling bug and most weekends are now spent on two wheels. Can anyone recommend any cycle routes / trails / parks that don’t allow dogs but are suitable for younger kids? We’re near Peterborough so anything up to 2 hours away is fine. Much appreciated

The only places I can think of being dog free are some beaches and the velodrome.
I suspect you’re going to have to toughen up and deal with dogs, long stupid retractable leads, and their owners as they are everywhere.

We normally go to Draycote water because they’re not allowed around the reservoir and cycle path. Toughening up isn’t an option for a young kid who’s had a v.bad experience but I get what you’re saying.

It's not the dogs that are the problem, it's people.

We're on our fifth dog now. All have been trained and are happy with traffic, horses, bikes, people and other dogs too.

Sally, Megan, Rascal, Phoebe, and now Sailor.

As clear a signal as any that the dog's in charge of the owners. Those leads announce "We can't do recall or stay and have given up trying..." I have some sympathy, as it took a lot of effort for me and spaniel to master them both. Tbh, I think the dog was brighter than me...

Pretty much anywhere were you go will be shared space which does mean that you’ll have to learn how to accommodate and manage some folk who you’d prefer not to encounter. That’s life, as they say. I cycle through woodlands and can’t recall having a bad experience with other people’s dogs, but it does happen. Perhaps having a dog of my own has helped with suitable experience and confidence.

Good luck, and I hope that in time your child will forget their bad experience and gain the skills needed.
Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

It’s something we all have to cope with regardless of any diagnosis. Whether we face up to a problem or avoid it is up to each individual.
As for the OP it’s fair to say most of us have children and recognise the problems childhood can bring. I think the general consensus so far has been to deal with the problem rather than run away from it.

Not dog free, but I think stanwick lakes only allows dogs on leads if that helps

Also some of the on road parts of the green wheel around Peterborough are very quiet if the occasional car is preferable to dogs - depends on the age of the kids though.

I was a single father of THREE autistic ADHD sons from the age of 7,6 and 4 when their mother walked out on them so I "recognise" the problem more than most

As Paulatic says above, he has it spot-on on both counts.

Actually I see a lot of tolerance towards disabled people here … mostly it’s deserved. Of course amongst the folk here there are some who, regardless of disability or not, you’d figuratively cross the street to avoid.

Pretty horrible to have one’s wife walk out on you and leave you caring for three particularly challenging children. A difficult situation all around.

The road I cycled on this afternoon was far from dog free in the morning. Ten dogs dumped, by, a despicable human, on a road near the Beef Tub. Six were caught and four shot by a farmer when in with livestock. Fb predictably are up in arms that 'fur babies' were shot by a farmer. I’d like whoever owned them to be shot.
This pic was taken just hours before I rode it.

Clearly not a solution for you but an added bonus of recently using Zwift is that the routes are dog and traffic free.

If you are not a dog lover it can be difficult. When younger, one of my daughters was petrified of dogs, can you imagine the fun I had trying to google "dogs not allowed" holidays? The search engines seem to dismiss the word "not" and display pages of dog friendly holidays.
