Do people cycle for pleasure, when does pleasure turn to obsession.

I often see runners who look (in my opinion) terrible, and think "if that is what running does to your looks i'd stop", same with cycling.
There's Type II Fun as well, of course.

It's well known that lots of athletic pursuits are punishing at the time (much Tour de France commentary, for example, seems to include the phrase "in a world of pain right now!"), but with all the benefits of hindsight people go back and do them again. Not everything that people find rewarding is fun for 100% of the time they're doing it, and indeed it can be the case that overcoming some adversity is ultimately part of the attraction.

I like riding my bike, I like paddling my kayak, I like skiing my skis. I like walking my feet.
Have I ever had bad days doing any of them? Yes for all of them, but that's part of the price of entry for the far more numerous rewarding days.

Pete.

thank you for the replies'.
Chai puzzled me but Google came to the rescue (a particular form of tea or ‘infusion’, but check for yourself).
it is indeed an infusion, tea and spice's, really nice and very good for the health depending on what spices you use.

Are you OK for weather gear. so rain or cold won't put you off any more than they have to?
i actually am, have got some good lightweight waterproofs but will also do some reading on the subject to ensure i will be covered when needed as the ones i have are not specifically for cycling.
I also suggest now thinking about your routine for checking and looking after the bike. The main aim being never to have to miss a ride because of something that you discover just before you set off.... or just afterwards!
already on it, having put my bike into the shop to get sorted initially, i now will do my own repairs/adjustments, starting with a service on the forks.
i have found a "cycling workshop" very close to me via the web that offers hire of tools, bench etc by the hour, also hopefully there will be the knowledge available should i need it, and i have found that there is plenty of help available both here on this site and also on uchube.

reet, sun's out, off for my ride, catch ya later.

That's great.

A couple of points.

I had my cycle to the station bike converted professionally some years back but found the range just wasn't good enough for my requirements so I now use it as my shopping bike for which it is very useful because Winchester is quite hilly!! Just a point to consider which may not be relevant immediately but if you do enjoy it you might want to go further.

Second point I would also go for an HR monitor.

Despite also being an oldgit I still do a fair amount of cycling so I have a cycle computer transferable between my other bikes. It gives me all sorts of useful info but the biggest display is my HR. I accept that it may not be entirely accurate at all times (I have/had AF myself) but it is useful to know I think although if you use one consistently I have found you can have rough idea of what the rate is without looking. If it get to about 145ish I stop for a drink/rest or if I am on a hill I get off and walk.

My cardio man is a very keen cyclist so when I first went to see him he was insistent that I continued regular cycling because of the other benefits.

I sometimes go out with the local CTC group but I always check the route before I go and if it isn't fun (ie too many hills) then I go out on my own.

Warm up Warm up Warm up.
Layer in winter ,lots of water olive oil and nuts in your cycling backpack. Avoid roads with parked cars as can be lethal when they open doors.
Consider If you can get ride of car. My car was idle 99% of the time. I got rid of it to a charity and do not miss it.

"What's the olive oil for?"

"expression of interleukin-1 in rats, while after physical activity and extra-virgin olive oil supplemented diet, the values return to a normal level compared to the control group. With our results we can confirm the importance of the physical activity in conjunction with extra-virgin olive oil diet in medical therapy to prevent osteoarthritis disease in order to preserve the articular cartilage and then the entire joint."

I do not pretend to understand the science but a liquid oil has to better for humans than hard solid fats. Re lubrication joints and heart disease. No one would put butter on their chain drive. Unless you want to slow down an opponents chain when they are not looking!
