Saddlebag QR brackets: Sqr vs extended Klickfix bar bag bracket

Post by SA_SA_SA »

I was looking at klickfix brackets recently* and it occurred to me the Klickfix seatpost adapter takes the opposite approach to Carradice Sqr in putting the distancing part on the permanent seatpost bracket rather than the bag: which is what I would have preferred Carradice do, as the metal sqr frame is a bit of a pain when carrying ones saddlebag as a shoulder bag. I suppose it increases unloaded bike weight fractionally but worth it for some.....

If the saddlebag is supported underneath by, e.g., a rack, I wonder how much the 5kg Klickfix limit could be exceeded by?

*lots of people would seem to be buying replacement back plates.....for upcoming holidays? :)

If you have a rack to support it, you'd arguably be better off with a rack pack.

Not for me, I find rackpacks small and awkward compated to a traditional saddlebag: I suspect they are liked by very tidy people, plus I prefer the transverse arrangement of a saddlebag(sheltered, weight further forward. :)

So my original question remains hopeful of an answer :)

Well, I've never used either system but looking at them online, the Klickfix does look it has a lot of cantilever going on.

For Carradice transverse saddlebags, I like the Nitto saddlebag grips. The Carradice leather loops are premanently fastened to the detachable portion of the grip, which uses a wheel quick-release skewer to attach the bag to the section of the grip mounted to the saddle, so it goes on and off very quickly. They hold the saddlebag very securely without any sway. But they really only fit on leather saddles, due to the way the grip mounts to the saddle rails. On this bike I also used a lightweight Nitto rack underneath the bag to prevent a heavily loaded bag sagging onto the wheel/mudguard. It's been very successful for quite a number of shorter tours where I've used just a saddlebag:

The best-thought-out transverse saddlebags I have come across are the ones from Bags by Bird, a one-man US business. I used one on the latest bike I put together. The bags fasten to the saddle loops with Voile straps, have stiffeners inside so that they don't sag onto the wheel, have an additional piece of dowel at the bottom front of the bag to prevent an unloaded bag from sagging forward and hitting the back of your thighs, and come with half a dozen piece of high-density foam to stand the front of the bag away from where it straps to the the seatpost:

The Carradice Bagman with a compatible saddlebag is also worth a look https://carradice.co.uk/shop/accessorie ... -supports/.

If the weight is supported by the rack and the KF bracket just holding it in place, I'd be surprised if any weight you wanted to carry there would trouble the bracket. The limit on the handlebar version is 7kg, the differences being the two point fixing and the lesser cantilever. I suspect those limits are very conservative, though with all such things exceeding them is at your own risk.

It's a pity the Bridge Street bag didn't survive into the modern era, an item well ahead of it's time, I think it would be far more popular now than it was when available.

That looks pretty similar to the Berthoud saddlebag, which uses a handlebar stem and carrier cantilevered off the seatpost to support the bag:

I made up my own similar bag about 35 years ago when I was given an old industrial treadle sewing machine - the bag hangs off an attachment similar to a tandem stoker stem, with stiffeners top and bottom to keep it off the wheel. That same bag is still in use, though the zips are starting to go.

If you are clamping anything metallic to a seatpost, make sure your seatpost is up to it, and clamp to insulation tape rather than directly to the post, to avoid scoring the post. I have had posts break off, so I'm very wary of clamping to them.

Thorn have their accessory bar to suit 27.2mm seat posts. Ideal for bigger bags/loads supported on a rack.

But the Sqr system has a cantilever via the metal frame that is left on the saddlebag (and makes use offbike with a shoulder strap less good) so you only buy the klickfix cantilever once per bike....

The sqr (Seatpost Quick Release?) seatpost bracket does have 2 metal bands vs one on the Klickfix though..
