can you mix tyres

Post by Pinhead »

if the tyre is the same dimension, 26 x 1.9 can you mix tread patterns if you have some odd ones.

Eg I have one spare MAXXIS worm drive and one spare Continental Double fighters spare ?

Thanks

Yes. Even if they're not the same dimension, as long as they fit the wheels. Some combinations work better than others, but what's the worst that could happen?

I mix tyres every day. I put them in the blender with a drop of olive oil and make a lovely sort of tyre-paste which I spread on bread.

Serious answer: as mjr says, tread is not particularly relevant. Nothing bad will happen.

Not only that, provided the tyre fits your wheel, you can use tyres of differing widths...
Certainly there are some people on the forum who have fitted a slightly wider tyre to their rear wheel, compared to the front (the difference was about 4 or 6mm) for greater comfort and shock absorption.
In the past I had a 2 inch wide tyre on the front and a 1.75 inch tyre on the back, to act as front suspension, in the same manner as Jeff Jones with his early mountain bike designs.

As long as the rim size matches the tyre size, say 26" , then any old combination will work and unless the tyres are really different you won't even know. I did stick a wheel with a 1" x 26" slick tyre in the rear of my MTB once as the correct one had a puncture and I was late for the pub. Twas a bit sketchy matched with a 2.5" knobbly on the front in the mud but it got me home.

No such thing as a stupid question.... if you're using push bikes after a period of being a motorist or motorcyclist then it's a bit wierd to think that you can mix tyres.

As an aside, I vaguely remember there was a thing back last century that you "didn't mix radial-ply and cross-ply tyres" but I never understood why...

Mountain bikers do it all the time, larger front. smaller back, get more traction and grip off the front, angled tread on the front as theory is it moves debris. Straighter tread on the back to try and prevent it sliding out.

You even see some Frankenstein bike now. 29er on the front 26 on the rear. Lets the front roll over the terrain and solid on the back for any heavy/seated landings..

Of course you can. Some even have different size tyres front and rear.

Different sidewall stiffness between types.
If put on the same axle, each would deform by a different amount going around a corner.
This difference would cause an additional sideways load on contact patch.
So a tyre could break traction and cause a skid at a slower cornering speed vs if you had the same type of tyre on both wheels.

Luck ........ :D
