STUCK on tyres :(

Post by Pinhead »

I have a set of MACH1 Sub Zero wheels which I like (for the look) on which the shop when I bought them fitted Kenda West tyres

The problem is that i killed a tyre lever trying to remove the tyre, two nor three work it is as if they are glued in, I can just get pert over the rim then nothing.

I am happy to sacrifice the tyres because if I did have a flat I am buggered, but were the 40 - 559 the right tyres or did they fit the wrong size for the wheel

Thanks

To save everyone time: the rim says ETRTO 559 x 19c.

It means that they fit. 559 is the "correct" rim size.
Have you squeezed the tyre bead down in to the centre of the rim? Both sides. This will give some slack. Use a couple of levers and take small bites.

This tip might help.
After deflating the tube go all round the tyre pinching the sides together to ensure that the beads are not stuck to the rim and are free to move.
I now see that matt has got there first.
It's the same the whole world over

Isn't it a blooming shame?

Yep did that, the bead (if I know right) is so far down 1/2"

If you can do it without damaging the rim, laying the wheel down on a couple of pieces of timber or something, and carefully stomping on the walls of the tyre. This will sometimes break the bond between rim and bead when a tyre has “gone gluey” and stuck really firmly to the rim.

Once you get all of the bead off the rim on both sides, you are in with a fighting chance of getting the tube out, then getting the tyre off by pushing the bead deep into the rim on the side opposite where you are levering.

It went on, it'll come off! Tyre away from the rim, into the well, decent tyre levers and a few of them. I have a steel set of levers for difficulty tyres, I use them in conjunction with a plastic one so I don't have to slide the steel ones around the rim.
Those Double Fighters are nice tyres, I hade some, though I'm not sure they're a huge advantage over your current ones.

Um... metal tyre levers will probably be made out of steel, which is a harder metal than the aluminium alloy wheel rims. If you do use metal tyre levers, there's a possibility that you'll mark the alloy rims... its annoying if your bike has disc brakes, but if your bike has rim brakes, you might even feel the mark or gouge every time you brake.
