Show me your bar tape!

Post by edgwatson1 »

Hi folks

I have a Spitfire TI, very monochrome looking silver / black.
Looking to change the bar tape from black to something else.

Looking for some inspiration if you would mind sharing a photo of your bar tape.

Cheers

No pics but I tend to do my Ti bike is bright colours. Currently red tape, bottles cages and pedals.
Way too much black in cycling parts if you ask me.

There's a long running thread on LFGSS and plenty of YouTube videos on technique..

There's very little interesting multicoloured tape around these days, unlike several decades ago. I imagine you're looking more for special windings, but I did manage to find some for my Dawes, in case it's of use.

After 74,000 mile it has all gone, still some stuff on the hoods - they just don't make stuff to last these days!

the bits of an old carry matt, cable-tied on is not an original part - user-add-on to help my hands, that also have not been made to last.

I went for bright orange Cinelli tape on the last bike I put together. It seemed to be a good colour match for the rest of the bike. There's actually a slight speckle in it when seen close up.

There's lots of ideas in this thread. One of many others you can find using the search feature.
I quite like the "harlequin" wrapping shown in this thread

Let's hope your GPS manages more than that. They cost even more than a roll of bar tape!

(good work with the matting  )

They do sell replacements though. :D It looks like your rhs bar end plug is missing. Not a lot of money to replace but can save you injury.

Some makes of bar tape come with handy short lengths of finishing tape which are totally unsuitable for the job. The end plugs are poor too.
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

I quite liked the Battenburg i had on my CX/touring bike for @ 5 years. Bit of a faff to do but the Bontrager cork tape lasted well

Black corkish bar tape always, can be invisibly repaired with black electrical insulation tape and thus last for decades....

Tape is best replaced periodically. I've seen (old) alloy bars corrode and fail due to salt/sweat / cleaning chemicals ?? being absorbed through the bar tape.

No GPS, I guess what you are looking at is the battery that is tethered to the dashcam ('Bar Cam' would probably be a more appropriate term, but may be dashcam is more descriptive) anyways it gives about 20 hours run time whicj means I only need to recharge about once a week.

I quite like the old battered look (it possibly matches the rider) I also would consider if I re-done the bar tape to a "new" look, it would suddenly make the frame look very out of place, which would mean the frame re-sprayed and new decals. Then I would have to wash the wheels and spend more time polishing than riding.

The bikes pretty good mechanically, epf for its mileage, and that's the important bit,.
