That's from 2018. I subsequently posted:

We used a Garmin mini in reach on Great Divide MTB route last year.
Small and functional with sos and messaging. Also allows friends and family to watch progress if you're into that. One off starter payment then you pay monthly only when you need it.
Mobile signal was patch in States where we were so calling for assistance was never a concern.

Never planned on having a stroke or anything, no

I think the Motorola Defy Satellite link is currently one of the cheaper options.

GPS training uk have a number of videos on YouTube.

I currently have a Garmin Inreach mini which costs me about £12 a month for a small number of satellite messages each month & has a SOS button which alerts a rescue co-ordination centre in the event of an emergency.

I'm a trendy consumer. Just look at my wobbly bog brush using hovercraft full of eels

I’ve recently bought a Garmin Montana 750i, which includes the InReach SOS feature.

Another vote for GPS Training. If you purchase from them, you get access to all of their training videos to help you get to grips with your unit.

I bought an Inreach Mini 2 late last year. Not really used it, but it's very small and light. It has good reviews. You sometimes see people on YouTube sporting one (but incidentally), in very remote spots.

Even without signal a 'phone with the emergency settings appropriately configured can be very helpful to eg first responders:
