Cracking noise when pedalling
Raleigh Classic 1984
I noticed a cracking noise when pedalling into a headwind this morning.
I am going to check for stiff links and dry pedals
Is there anything else I should be checking?
Thanks

Re: Cracking noise when pedalling
Possibly rear QR not fully tightened.
wear in BB.
Cranks not fully tightened.
Saddle
Shoe pedal interface
I suggest you take everything off the bike that you can and try riding it to see if the cracking noise is still there.
I once found a loose bottle cage screw was the cause.

Rims breaking up can make a creaking noise. Happened to me once

Re: Cracking noise when pedalling
I have something similar with my Ridgeback Speed, only I can not just hear the noise but **feel** it when pedalling...
Still not sure what is causing it though
Re: Cracking noise when pedalling
Probably bearings, try pedals and bottom bracket first - but could be a load of things.

Re: Cracking noise when pedalling
thanks and apols to OP for the thread hijack!
I had a new BB fitted as I had blamed the noise on that, there was a lot of play on the crank, that's now fixed with the new BB but the noise is still there?
Re: Cracking noise when pedalling
Ah noises! Golden rule is keep it simple and be methodical to isolate the problem. There are any number of possible contenders (pedals, cranks, chainring bolts, chain, BB, bearings-often more a gravelly noise than click, shoelace etc) and you will get some apocryphal stories ranging from saddles to imminent handlebar failure and frame demise!
FWIW clicks/cracks on each rotation are IME often loose cranks as Jonathan suggests.

[Yeah, yeah, I know, sorry etc.]
Re: Cracking noise when pedalling
I had a similar case recently - I was sure it was the headset, turned out to be the front hub. Even that was problematic as I couldn't readjust it out. It turned out to be that the bearing cup (not cone) was loose. Goodness knows how that happens.
I used to have a Litespeed, every winter it would develop an annoying tick by February caused by a tiny bit of corrosion or muck on the Campag Record hub axle tip in the rear dropout. Remove wheel, wipe tip with finger, replace, silence.

Re: Cracking noise when pedalling
interesting, with mine I can feel it through the pedals/drivechain, not just teh noise but the sensation too, it feels like something is sticking or not running as smooth as it should, I suspected the chain or else something at the rear (not the front)?hamster wrote: ↑18 Aug 2023, 4:05pm I had a similar case recently - I was sure it was the headset, turned out to be the front hub. Re: Cracking noise when pedalling
Headwind requires more torque so I’d say bottom bracket or rear hub. The latter is my educated guess.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.
