Airnimal Joey - Rear rack

Post by steveparry »

Does anyone know if I could fit a standard rear rack of some kind instead of the branded one - it's £90!!! Or £60 for the "retro-fit" kit - whatever that means...

Yes most racks can be made to fit, though some better than others. Unless you're going to be using large panniers, something designed for 24" wheels will sit better and not enlarge the first fold. You might need longer stays to reach the Joey's seatstay fittings, if you choose a rack with round stays then Tubus do some long ones available from the usual suppliers. The only other issue is if you have disc brakes, depending on caliper, you may need to space the leg out a bit.
This one from Tubus looks like it'd be a good choice, can't see a UK supplier (Though didn't look hard) but these are easy to deal with. I'm fairly sure the same rack is also marketed as "Racktime" which might also be worth a search.

Relating to your other post about guard fitting. Are you intending to break the bike down to it's smallest size for packing? if so, you might want to consider a rack with a platform, what I've done is attach the guard to the rack, and done away with the stays. They go on and off together very quickly.

I don't know how they compare with the Airnimal rack, but Isla Bikes sell various sized racks to fit their bikes:
