I think we suffer from a wide disparity of income in an increasingly unequal society and this is reflected in the up-market / down-market providers of goods and services.
Spot-on IMO, in all sorts of sectors, and it becomes increasingly difficult to find ‘in the middle’ provision, presumably because the market for almost everything largely segments into a very price-conscious, quality-insensitive part, and a price-insensitive, quality-sensitive part.

One of the, many, things to do with modern gears that I find incomprehensible. Nothing to do with rumpy-pumpy.

Thank you for the link: an absolutely splendid bit of video explanation: I had no idea chains could flap about like that.

Don't think you'd need that for normal cycling though.

I'm beginning to think this forum needs some sort of "clutch" to prevent flapping off topic, maybe thick / thin moderating could work ?

It is suspected that at the start of the financial year the new unitary Somerset Council will give a section 1114 (I think that's the right number) notice, advertising that they will be officially bankrupt and without the finance to meet their legal obligations.
It's an exciting time...

...at this point, perhaps our way of life, where we work to make products to sell in order to buy products, is slowly grinding to a halt...

..there's only so many cars or bicycles you can buy, there's only so many white goods you can have in your house.. there's only so many t.v you can have or electronic games you can play...

..the question is whether our society will survive moving from a consumerist to perhaps something more spiritual.. where the type of bike we ride, and its technology becomes less important and our journey becomes more so..

Council finances have been cut to the bone over the last 10+ years of "austerity" but that's nothing to do with cycle retail....

Sorry, it dovetails with an earlier post from PH... an observation that if the cycle retail in is in meltdown it may be symptom of a larger shift in society....
