Is Argos' E-Move Electric bikes worth it?

Post by W0lfy »

Hello, I'm am brand spanking new here :)

I haven't cycled since I moved to UK in 2016 and I'm itching to get back into traveling for ao many years now. I used to cycle on relatively flat roads for about 100-120 KM to the mountains each weekend. The bike wasn't the greatest, an average cheap (can't remember the model but it cost 350 Euros so not great) mountain bike.

I am looking into traveling on the road but also country road and gravel (nothing sport, just remote, including forests) because I want to do photography (landscape, wildlife, nature) outside of my immediate vicinity. I don't care about speed but comfort and resilience is a priority.

I have 2 main issue to tackle: hills is the first. I live in South West England and most roads and terrains are not very flat. And I have difficulty breathing as well as pushing myself to far before I realise I broke something in me. That's why I'm hoping to get an electric like, to help me get over the hill and/or making easier to come back home if I pushed myself to far to have enough energy to make it back. (I know most electric bikes have a reasonable mileage before running out of juice, around 50 miles)

The other is my weight. I have managed to lose 2.6 stones in the last 6 months but I have reached the limit of how much I can lose just on diet. I'm at 123-125 KGs and I am over the typical 100 KGs manufacturer recommended limit which is extremely frustrating. And that doesn't include my camera gear, water and a jacket or rain protection and helmet (which would be between 5 and 10 more KGs).
I am worried that the spokes and the tires won't be able to take the pressure very well (and I had very frustrating problems with flats on the road in the past).

I asked about Argos bikes because some are on sale, the E-Move Premium 28 inch, and I can afford it on my Argos card. But I can't buy it cash (to save up thatuch I would have to wait for next year). Does anyone have any experience with the build quality of E-Move bikes?

Autumn is here and it's my favourite time of the year for the next 2 months and I really want to travel to the forests nearby and get the autumn colours, especially early in the morning, where hiking can get a bit tiresome having to get up at 4 or 3 AM to get to the location in time.
Any help would be greatly appreciated it.

No experience of E-Move bikes, appears to be Argos 'own brand', but have you noticed the advertised range? only18 miles? - and these estimates are usually highly optimistic. If you ran out of battery it would be a very heavy bike to pedal.

Thank you, this is very helpful. Are there any other bikes on the Argos store that seems worth their cost? If not I will have to look for a 2nd hand bike in my area.

You'll find most cheap ebikes are absolute rubbish as far as the bike itself is concerned ie brakes gears etc are the lowest grade possible. Think child's cheap Argos mountain bike and bung a motor on it. Yes it'll go and it'll feel OK cos the motor masks the crapness of the rest of the bike.

Get a second hand half decent bike and put a kit on it -- takes about 2 hrs work and it'll cost a fraction of a decent ebike but every bit as good.

No luck on finding a used electric bike near me. All I have found, that was advised for my needs is this one:

The seller will refurbished it for free and sell it at 189 £ and I can get 10% off (which is going to go on the cost of attaching mudguards. I'll just have to walk up the hills for a while.

I haven't taken the offer yet, the bike was set aside for a week until I can get the funds.

Are you near anywhere that has a cycle charity that refurbs and sells bikes?

If you are, you could definitely get a better secondhand bike, for less money.

One thing to consider is suspension: do you really need it?

It adds weight, and most suspension on cheaper bikes is of doubtful use anyway.

If where you live has significant hills, weight and gearing (having low gears) are going to be crucial factors for you, along with the usual ones of making sure the bike is the right size for you and is in safe condition.

I live in Taunton area. The bike I showed is from a second hand community dontation store where they refurbished them.
For as much as I know things I know nothing about bikes (and I am disappointed with myself for that but I will learn with time). I'm 1.8 meters tall with longer torso then feet, 124 KGs currently.
The area has a lot of hills, some of them quite steep, getting to Exmoor or Dartmoor National Parks involves a lot of hills.
If 300 £ is not enough then I will have to wait for next year to get something else.

The problem you've got is knowing whether any secondhand purchase is fully functional and likely to remain so for a reasonable time, or a potential money pit needing new drivetrain, braking system and who knows what bearings. The bike shown does not get off to a good start by being filthy, but then I hate washing my bikes  On the plus side it's from a reputable brand, the fork stanchions don't look corroded and the saddle looks OK. Hardtail MTBs can be a good utility bike that can take a few knocks, and will have low gears - just don't expect speed! The potential is there, but you're going to have to trust the seller - or do you have a cycling friend who could take a look at it?
As for electrification, a rear hub kit could be purchased for circa £350 from Yose Power (but the 250W version, currently out of stock) - a mate of mine has done just that recently with a new Specialized hybrid for his missus - new e-bike for £1k - but would cost a bit to install if you didn't DIY (which does need expertise and tools, also need to check that the battery fits the frame).
Good luck, whichever way you go.

Here's a really good option
-- hydraulic brakes
-- 27 gears 3 x 9 good for climbing hills
-- good tyres
-- very easy to fit electric kits on ( I've done it )
-- looks like new
-- just over 2 hrs away by train which you could bring it home on.
