Of course the obvious solution is the one the manufacturers probably intended. Chuck them away and buy new

I have a similar problem. The pedals are brand new (Shimano PD-EF202), but the right one made a loud clicking noise (twice per turn) and it felt as if something was wrong with the bearings. I should of sent them back, but I was daft enough to open them up (after doing some research on the net) assuming that it would not be too much of a problem to properly adjust the bearings without the proper tool (just trial and error). When I opened them up, it turned out that some of the bearing balls were stacked upon each other instead of next to one another and one bearing ball was stuck between the bearing race and the pedal wall. When trying to reassemble, exactly that the same thing keeps happening (bearing balls escaping or stacking on top of each other) every time I tighten the locknut. What could be the problem? Could it be that the grease has too high viscosity (this is what my intuition tells me)? Would it be worth cleaning the whol thing out and trying again with fresh grease? Thanks in advance for any advice.

All the good stuff is here.....https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/product/ ... EF202.html
i haven't gone through it all, but i did see a diagram with a "special tool"....basically a box spanner within a box spanner....which allows you to turn the locknut or cone selectively.
....this may not answer the problem with the balls mis-behaving!

I've not had any experience in what you are attempting but can see the issue
Would a plumbers box spanner not have been any good
There fur tightening the nuts on a tap base underneath the sink
There come in all sizes and have extremely thin walls
I'm aware your sorted but it may help others
Widely available in the likes of Toolstation and Screwfix

The tool (just a piece of metal) costs twice as much as the pedals... thanks but no thanks.

Well, it turned out that even on the other side the bearing balls were dislodged (where they are held in place with a plastic cap). Whenever I put the plastic cap in place, they get dislodged again. I can't help thinking that the grease is just too thick.
Should have bought 5€ Xi Jinping pedals instead of this junk. .

Your local charity bike recycling place might lend you the tool

I'm confident a box spanner within a box spanner wouldn't work with the BBB pedals- just not enough room. I will concede a 'semi-box spanner' would work though - maybe just 2 opposing flats of a suitable material(ie Cr-van not the steel cheese of usual box spanners) could work. In fact an open-ended spanner suitably ground away could be used to tighten the locknut along with a small screwdriver or similar to hold the cone.
ETA the nut on the BBB pedals I have is 11mm - may differ on other models?

If I have got this right, the various special tools are as follows:

DMR V8 v2 pedal tool

11mm cone / 9mm lock nut

Shimano tool TL-PD63

10mm cone / 7mm lock nut
&
11mm cone / 8mm lock nut

Shimano tools TL-PD300 and TL-PD400 (previous model TL-PD33)

13mm cone / 10mm lock nut
&
10mm cone / 7mm lock nut

MKS pedals like the Sylvan range have 15mm cones and 12mm lock nuts. No special tool is sold for them, and I've found it easy enough to adjust them in the past using the blade of a screwdriver to stop the cone turning. Nevertheless, based on a quick check a 15mm crank bolt spanner (AKA 'peanut butter' spanner) will fit the cone, but the remaining available purchase on the lock nut flats does not appear to be enough even for a thin wall 12mm socket, although I suspect a box spanner might work. It's possible that different crank bolt spanners will give better or worse access to the lock nut (mine is a TA spanner).

Ah -- you didn't mention that -- assumed it was the usual 9 and 11 tool as per thread title.

It seems the larger ones can be sorted with a screwdriver and socket but I had tried all that with the 9/11 one but just too small to get the screwdriver blade in past the socket.
