NCU sign

I have taken guardianship of an old Nation Cyclist Union sign and intend to restore it to its original, painted appearance.
The previous keeper is uncertain of its colours and we cannot ascertain the meaning of the two star-shaped symbols that appear to contain the letters W, A and Y within.
Can anyone assist with these queries?

I haven't seen a NCU warning sign, but other signs I've seen have been orange on black.

A couple of examples of warning signs and a bit of history here:

You can have it in any colour you like as long as it's black.....or white!
There's a black and red on white version shown here, but these may of course not be the original colours:

This references another at a motor museum that is also black letters on a white background. One of the photos in here has what looks like the same sign in the corner:

If you prefer white on black, there's support for that in here

Then right at the bottom of this article
https://www.cyclingnorthwales.uk/cyclin ... ed-wheels/ , there are similar signs in white on black (as above) and black on white (though may not be an NCU sign).
Grey?

Thanks for all the input folks. I will probably go for the white background option…..but then again.
Can anyone shed any light on the star-shaped symbol also mentioned?

I'm surprised they left out this one, on Honister until around the turn of the century:

To perhaps state the obvious - I would suggest that it is highly likely that all surviving signs have been repainted at some time in there long life, in which case the best chance of having authentic colours is by reviewing those pictures taken at around the time the signs were introduced.
