Ultegra Bottom Bracket Questions

Post by marksbike »

So it's me again, the guy who had a hard time finding out there were multiple different types of freehubs, who has just found out about the different types of bottom brackets.......how nice!

So I have a boardman c7 teams carbon which currently has a FSA press fit bottom bracket (I brilliantly purchased a screw in one!). I'm pretty certain I am going to need a press fit bracket and the bb30 has been mentioned (although the way it looks with the slanted top on each side makese think it wouldn't fit perfectly. This one ( https://www.balfesbikes.co.uk/component ... te=BB7241B) seems to be just like the one I currently have.

Is there anything I need to be particularly aware of when making this purchase? Are there different lengths maybe for different frames?

Hopefully this will be easier than the freehub debacle.

Is it possible the bottom bracket will already fit the crank?

Could not just buy another FSA bottom bracket identical to your current one ?

Do you have the tools to remove and inset a press fit bottom bracket ?

The O.P. has bought an Ultegra groupset to fit to this bike, so yes, that should work. The FSA bb is likely for a different diameter spindle so wouldn't be compatible.

It's easy to overdo the preload on the bearings so best watch some videos on all of this stuff, including about hubs and freehubs.

Park tool website has a lot of good videos on bike mechanics, and also good information about the many bottom bracket standards etc and all bike mechanics stuff. Bike mechanics are simple in a way because most stuff is visible and logical if you are mechanically minded but there are so many compatibility issues and standards that expensive mistakes are easy to make.

I've found the best lasting BBs for press fit are the angular contact BBs from Wheels Manufacturing that have the two halves screw together, so they're not relying on the BB shell in the frame to keep the left and right bearings in alignment. They're not cheap, though, but I have yet to need to replace one that I've installed in a frame, and between my wife and I we probably have about half a dozen of them in various frames.

The answer to press fit bottom brackets is Praxis Works, it's ingenious and solves everything...

https://praxiscycles.com/product/m30-bb ... 68mm-road/

They aren't cheap, but if it means doing away with press fit then it's worth the cost.

The bearings can be knocked out and new ones pressed in, too.

The "Enduro 2437" bearing mine takes are cheap.

100%

I couldn't get the press fit BB to stop squealing when I bought a Boardman carbon bike from Halfords. I took it back twice and they greased it up each time. No difference.
I took it to a small bike shop who introduced me to Praxis Works. The owner changed it over and I sent the receipt to Halfords. Was £80 for the BB and the fitting. They agreed to pay half but I pushed them and sent articles about noisy BB30s from trade magazines. They relented and paid in full. The noises down below stopped immediately.
I became a Praxis fan for life.

Hi guys

I know I'm asking for a lot of help but I really don't want to get it wrong this time.

My bike is a boardman c7 teams carbon 2015 I think. The Size of the hole for the bottom bracket is 42mm roughly. The width of the frame is 72mm roughly but the bottom bracket isn't that long as it doesn't come all the way out each side. The Ultegra crank is FC 6800 model, the pole of the crank is roughly 108mm and the hole of the pole which will stick into the bottom brack is roughly 23mm.

Can anyone point me in the direction of the correct model bottom bracket is need please. It is possible to upgrade this frame to an ultegra crank isn't it?

I have been told that a bb86 or pf30 will fit but there are different sizes. I think this is it https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/144966149789 ... BM2qGU79pi

You need to measure the width of the frame. I think it'll be a BB72 but 86 is possible.
The axle width for an Ultegra chainset is 24mm.

And yes, there are dozens of different types of BB now. It can be an absolute minefield.

The measurements are above in a previous post. I think the one in the link is the correct one but I just want to be sure.

Your BB shell measures 72mm. The ebay link states:
Frame Type: Press Fit Road/MTB 86.5mm and 92MM Width Frames
So this is not suitable for your frame.

I was thinking that but some bottom brackets stick out at each side and I think an ultegra bottom bracket maybe require one of those as the frame is 72mm but the crank pole is 108mm. Also the crank cog side dips in so there would have to be some kind of buffer else it would be scratching the frame.
