Handlebar tape difficulty

Post by nirakaro »

When I rest my hands on the front-to-back bit of the bars just behind the shifters, the weight of my hands gradually pushes the tape forward until it no longer overlaps, and starts to unravel. The back of the (plastic) tape is slightly adhesive, but not enough to stop this happening. Is there a trick to avoiding this? Wrap tighter? Use an adhesive? Buy more expensive tape? Recommendations?

Outside to inside, front to back.

If you can add one then a photo would help.

I’ve not had this problem but I use cloth tape. Aim to have the wrap such that no edge opposes the forward movement of your hands.
Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

What sort of tape is it?

Needs to be wrapped tighter. Tape softens over time and stretches - especially in hot weather. This allows movement.

When I install new tape, I do with a view that I will unwrap a month or two later and wrap tighter. The second wrap resists movement as the stretch has occurred.

I use Cinelli cork tape.

Don,t think I,ve ever had that problem.Surely, most tape has a central sticky bit which prevents this,no?

I assume this means you start at the stem? Whichever, and although I’d consider that the ‘wrong’ way, it makes sense to try the alternative and see how you get on. Having never had the problem I’m also wondering about how hard you’re gripping the bars and whether there is a more general bike setup issue?

warm the tape up before application and stretch it well during the process.

Start at the bar ends and work to the middle.

I'd use a pen to mark the tape not a knife.
No problems with tape movement or creep.
I find the wrap around the bends and brake lever tricky and takes a couple of tries.
