Rear rack (no towbar) for a 2019 Prius

Post by LucyEliz »

I'm looking for a rear rack for a 2019 5-door Prius. No towbar. The Roofbox.co.uk website says that there are NO rear racks that will fit this model of car. I don't know whether to trust this. The Halford website, for example, reckons a a Saris bones would work ok.
Does anybody have any experience of mounting a rear rack on a Prius of this vintage...?

The roofracks.co.uk says
Unfortunately there is no rear mounted bike carrier fitment for this vehicle.
https://www.roofracks.co.uk/thule-rear-mount-guide/857

I presume that is referring to something securely mounted, rather than simply hanging off the back

Best to talk to Toyota, some cars on the market cannot have racks fitted.

I'd always check the Witter and Towbar Express sites, but for that Prius I'd expect the same negative result:

https://www.towbarexpress.co.uk/towbars/toyota-towbars/

Group test, with demo of the Saris Bones:

How about asking Halfords to do a test fit of that Saris Bones with you watching?

Yes to check with Toyota. The Toyota car club cars I use are very flimsy in terms of body panels/bumpers. Most parts can be squidged by hand.....

Thanks, everyone. Yes, maybe spending the £20 for the Halford's fit of the Saris Bones, to see does it ACTUALLY fit, would be the way to go.

i don't know if it applies to the Prius, but I used to have a Peugeot where you could not fit a rack to the boot because there was no frame around the window - the hinges went straight through the glass. This meant that any brackets for a rack would also be bearing direct on the glass rather than a frame.

Also many bootlids are plastic, with similar weakness.

Do not trust anyone but Toyota, a lot of modern cars are designed and made to only transport people and things inside them. As others have said they can be very flimsy. Certainly do not trust the advice of anyone like Halfords who have a vested interest in selling you something.

It is possible to fit a tow bar to a Prius. Mine had one and i used a Thule tow bar mounted rack.

you would still need an auxiliary power outlet fitted for the number plate that hangs off the bikes or covered lights/plate is illegal

My Gen 3 (2010) Prius specifically prohibited towing. I guess that doesn’t prevent the installation of a towbar, once out of warranty (or even before if you feel lucky), but more likely to be done by a third party - Bodgit &Scarper springs to mind.
