It doesn't matter how much they beef one set of stays up, the bit in the middle is still free to do its own thing.- which is usually to chime your presence at every bump in the road. Church bells are well braced at one end....

Personally I would go aluminium because the modern stainless steel is not good.
If you expect them not to rust then think again...

as the brine dries it can reach any strength, so nothing is truly safe unless you wash your bike to remove the salt. So it is not necessarily the 'modern stainless steel' which is at fault here.
Also please note that freshtripe also do all the VO stuff

I certainly hope the stainless steel vessels we keep 60% nitric acid in at work don't rust.
There are less resistant austenitic steels about but that doesn't make them poor quality, just a poor choice.

My personal favourite mudguards are the Berthoud stainless steel ones. They come in three different widths (40mm, 50mm, 60mm) for each of the three common wheel sizes (559, 584, 622). They have good beefy stays, seem to last indefinitely (I have some that have been installed for more than 20 years), and I don't notice any rattles or noises except for when stones etc get caught between the tyre and guard. They also make really nice leather mudflaps for them.

they are bit noisy IME and [esp. if you have very short seat stays] they can still break unless you fit more stays to them
