BETTER hearing of traffic from behind

Post by Pinhead »

I like so many find hearing cars etc especially on our narrow Welsh roads hard from behind.

I found this

So here is mine, and what a difference.

3 cable ties each side and WOW! it works, just some foam rubber

MINIMAL front wind noise and can hear rear vehicles

Will do better ones later

Cool!

Perhaps velcro ties rather than zip ties for the mark ii- if only to allow you to wash the foam after a hot ride?

However on the whole, absolutely genius!!

Another option, although a lot more money is the Garmin Varia.

Although it does require a compatible bike computer or phone.

A similar idea to play around with:

I sometimes suffer with wind noise, but not often enough to do more than think about doing something...

My solution is to wear hats that don't have straps around the ears.

I sewed some felt patches onto mine years ago to cut down on that horrible wind noise, and as per the OP I also noticed that it greatly improved my ability to hear traffic from behind. (it also helps with warmth in the winter months)

silly plastic outer cracked up and blew off some time ago (don't think they are meant to be used in the sun)

Sorry they cover the ears reducing sound as well

ultimately they must reduce all sound, but by removing that buffeting noise of the wind around the ears, other sounds seem to become more noticeable.

I was wondering about why this solution was being suggested to a problem I have never had.
If helmets need clumps of sponge rubber to make them tolerable, well, another strike against them.
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?
