E bike regarding fires I doubtrareposter wrote: ↑3 Nov 2023, 2:11pmI've never once had to leave a bike locked up outside a B&B or hotel.
Premier Inn, Travelodge, Holiday Inn etc all allow bikes in the rooms (you can request a ground floor room to aid with this).
Most B&Bs, especially in tourist places have secure bike storage options, you won't need a £250 lock!

No need to shout!
That seems unreasonable, if it's a certified e bike. Could you offer to remove it from the bike, wrap it in a fire blanket and not charge it in the room? Maybe leaving it at reception so wrapped.
As some e bikes are used due to disabilities, it seems likely to be discriminatory to ban them all.

Ditto all mobile phones, laptops, cameras, etc.etc. It's safety theatre and should be challenged.
Re: Does anyone have this lock hiplok
You are regularly asking for advice on cycling matters here and elsewhere, and get good and factual replies from many people.
Instead of just making a bland "shouty" statement, perhaps you could back it up with some facts and help other people.
Which hotels/B&B's are refusing e-bikes and batteries?
Where are they?
Where do they say this - website?
Have you actually asked and been refused?
Thank you.

Re: Does anyone have this lock hiplok
Yes and no: angle grinders will defeat all locks eventually but the Hiplock is far more resistant and takes much longer, significantly longer, to cut through than even a Diamond rated Abus or Kryptonite lock.Mike Sales wrote: ↑3 Nov 2023, 12:41pm I note that the advertising says only that the lock 'resists' a grinder. So does any lock, up to a point.

Re: Does anyone have this lock hiplok
I think I'd be looking for accommodation that would securely store my bike, though that needn't be in the room. Even if you carry the best of locks, how are you then going to secure the battery to the bike?
Re: Does anyone have this lock hiplok
Don't some e bike batteries lock into place?

Phones, laptops etc are almost always professionally made and certified plus it's actually quite difficult to do user replacements of batteries on many modern phones and laptops.
A shop-bought e-bike shouldn't have any issues either because again, the battery and build is all manufacturer certified.
The "buy a motor from China and bolt it to any random bike/scooter" stuff that's available can be an absolute liability. Generally made to far lower standards and fitted by untrained people, often chipped for higher speeds, and it's an open door for potential incidents. There have been many documented incidents of fires on such bikes/scooters so it's right to be considerably more careful of those than it is of (eg) mobile phones.

I called Travel Lodge customer services 0871 984 8484 who told me that they have "real concerns over the safety of their residents / staff and would consider charging of batteries in room, a safety concern and that they are looking into this for future reference.Cadence wrote: ↑3 Nov 2023, 7:20pmYou are regularly asking for advice on cycling matters here and elsewhere, and get good and factual replies from many people.

The large print was a mistake I am not perfect
I have also called hotels in advance who say "We have never been asked this before we all have to look into this" including two hotels in Llandudno, therefore it would be un realistic an unethical to book in advance and 1. sneak a battery in and 2. stupid as I would have nowhere to sleep/stay.
I am used to doing research see attached.
