Best light on seat stay

Post by robert17 »

People, have we any recommendations for a seat stay fitting rear light? I'd be very grateful. Thank you. Robert.

A bit more information is probably needed to make a recommendation, for example: your budget, power source, features required etc.

Removable battery, USB, or dynamo?

Thanks

Jonathan

PS: Our removable lights now nearly all use Cateye fittings, the interchangeability is often helpful.

Edit: Crossed post.

Another cateye fan here, I use their fittings for seatpost/seatstay/ rear rack on different bikes and swap between.

Okay. Certainly not dynamo and fairly standard. Budget may push to £60. Thank you.

Two lights I have that came with seat stay mounts are Smart Trail 80 (uses AAA batteries) and Cygolite Hypershot 350 (USB rechargeable). I bought the Smart lights from Merlin - can't remember where I got the Cygolite. The Smart is much cheaper, but the Cygolite is much brighter - it's so bright that you wouldn't want to use it on a bunch ride, as riders behind you will be complaining about being dazzled.

Both lights have pretty good runtime, like several three or four hours rides on a charge.

I think this bracket is the one I have on my mtb seat stay. Then you can use any cateye light

Doh! I thought that I'd already asked about the diameter of the stay...

The Cateye Viz lights numbered 100 to 450, based on lumens and costing from £16 to £39 come with the SP-15 bracket which allows for fitting to a wide range of seat stays, including fine aero stays.

I've had no problems fitting Lezyne rear lights on my seat stays. However, it's best to have one which is bright and provides a wide angle beam as it's facing upwards at an angle and not straight back.
Usually riding a Spa Cycles Aubisque or a Rohloff-equipped Spa Cycles Elan Ti

Cateye rear lights are pretty good and the range should suit most budgets. A bonus is that some of them run for ages on regular, replaceable batteries.

I think almost any rear light can be fitted to the seat stays, using a 'p' clip and a suitable bracket. How keen are you?

Sorry if I’m being a pedant but might you (please) change the thread tittle please to ‘best’ rather than ‘rest’; IIRC it’s possible to alter the title in the original post, but if not then maybe ask a mod to help. Clear tittles usually get better responses.

Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

Following Brucey's post, here's my example. The rear lamp is dynamo powered, it's bolted to a nylon bracket off a reflector which is then bolted to a Sanyo clamp I found at my local 'recycle-a-bike' charity workshop. There's a rubber strip between the clamp and seat post to stop it from slipping down.
