You could get a Musto sou'wester for £15 from mailspeedmarine.com , but a Goretex jacket with hood will be much more effective at keeping you dry and warm than a sou'wester. Modern hoods have adjustment to fit your head so that your side vision is not impeded, even when you turn around.

I've never found the answer to what to wear NOT to get wet, but what to wear in the rain is rather different.
In the first place it is about inside the
wind/rain cheater, in the second about the strength of the outer jacket.
If you can avoid sweating (!) then you can keep the jacket fairly dry even in the rain and the quality of it does not matter too much.
I buy millett's Kag bags, which are just "tailored"
bits of plastic. They are only showerproof so I put beeswax on to waterproof .
They cost £15. I can't get a luminous yellow one any more, but the CTC are now doing a similar one on the shop. same price.
Nothing worse than wet inside and wet outside, but if you are generating heat it does not matter too much

Paramo waterproof gear is very good with nikwax proofing.
They do a velez smock but its not cheap (£160 but you may get 10% off)
It isn't such a close fit, it depends how cycle specific you want the coat. It does work & when used with a paramo shirt underneath i havn't found anything better in years of looking!

If you wear something with a rim, even just a peak, this not a problem. It is one of the ways manufacturers have of getting you to buy new,
is that it is dirty (and your vision is not good looking round). When it is clean it does not matter!

Thanks for all of the advice, im gonna wait till after christmas now so i can buy something with christmas money!
Oh yeah, does anyone know roughly how far it is to hereford from Merthyr (via brecon) and whether there is a yh nearby?
