Today's crazy idea - dynohub as motor?

Post by LittleGreyCat »

Idly destroying a few braincells thinking:
An electric motor and a dynamo have a lot in common.
One generates electricity when spinning, and the other uses electricity to spin.
Then there's the recharging effect on electric vehicles when braking and going down hill

O.K. you aren't going to get 250W to drag you down the street, but could you get enough to just trickle along a bit more?
I assume in real life any boost would be equivalent to the drag when you have your lights on.
So not in any way a practical riding aid, but....

Despite the name most bike dynamos are magnetos:

Watch this -- there's a bit about using regen braking on electric bicycles -- the young fella explaining it seems well knowledged about the subject and can explain it well

Also not easy to do as you'll need an A.C. supply that's synchronised to the coil position relative to the permanent magnets to drive a dynohub (=alternator) as a motor.
It's a simple thing with a brushed d.c. generator - you just supply current at the correct polarity (otherwise you'll be cycling backwards).
