(Just a not to all those who take everything I type as being po-faced serious - the umbrella bit is a joke - not true - intended to make you laugh).

You mean they stole them instead?

Well, I don't like to ask.

That's not as improbable as it sounds - after all, they don't pay for their wild bird seed, bread crusts, rice pudding left-overs etc, so maybe, just maybe, they have a free source of umbrellas. They fly off as soon as I try to ask them, so that could indicate a guilty conscience.

Now hang on there...it's one thing to suggest that sparrows are a bunch of freeloading, handout taking ...... umn....sparrows, but quite another to suspect them of petty larceny just because they refuse to answer questions. They have every right to fly off without a peep, what do you expect them to do....sing like canaries ?

Oh gosh Cranky - you're absolutely right - I feel just awful now. There they are, covering our hawthorne, chirping away for us, despite the rain. I'm going to put some expensive M&S crusty granary bread out for them now - just to atone for what I've said - I didn't mean it badly - honestly I didn't.

Incidentally - and back to the original question - it's pouring down in Halifax. Situation normal really.

Been raining all day in Teesside, in fact the double coast to coast is cancelled.

New route is now in place, just a run up to Kirkby Stephen, back to Osmotherley, over to the Esk Valley. Then onto the Steam train to Pickering, Scarborough, Robin Hood's Bay and Hinderwell.

Well, it's a tour is'nt it.

Same here. 'For one week only' I've swapped childcare duties for airport taxi, long-term car park, domestic security and last but not least, dog-walker. Even the dog doesn't want to go out.

I keep thinking I've just seen a couple of giraffes standing about waiting on the corner.

This morning it was dry and sunny enough to put the sleeping bags out to dry.

Whilst I was out mid-morning it came on to persist it down - come lunchtime wet sleeping bags.

Oh..........................dear!

Hi JohnW (glug, glug) I'm speaking to you through my snorkel (glug, glug.)

It was fine and dry here all morning, but this afternoon I was out on dog-walking duty when the whole day's ration came down in one lump. Only a few hundred yards from home when it started but in drowned rat mode by the time I got home. Sun came out just as I was home and under cover.

There's an old chap down Gelderd Road with a long white beard - looks to be building some sort of large boat.

Well i managed to miss most of the rain on Tuesday pm on my way home, everywhere was clearly sufficient wet that I was obviously following the rain.

Not so today, it was so dull and damp looking here that I could not believe it was not actually raining, set off any way and half way to the cafe got drenched! The return home was dry but some of my route had been turned into rivers, so def needed the snorkels and flippers!

Trenchfoot is now setting in!

PS glad to hear you are looking after your sparrows properly and giving them some decent up market food. 3 Goldfinches visited my bird table :D

It's a nice evening in Stockton on Tees, this time last night a shower front after another. Anyway all the camping gear is washed and dried for next year's trip.

Tommorrow, more rain forecasted for North-East. Have to go into Nevisport, Middlesborough, to get a new ruc-sac for next year's Coast to Coast walk.

Stopped raining here this evening.

It was nice and sunny when I rode out this morning, but as I reached Pensilva toward the edge of Bodmin Moor, the heavens went black and it poured down with a vengeance. I hid in the Spar shop for 20 minutes!

The sun came out again, so off I went with the roads awash. Later on it drizzled, then the sun came out again.

On the way back to base, at mile 25 of 30, the heavens opened again, but this time didn't stop, so after sheltering for a while I carried on. I could not have been wetter. The road was like a river, and I was cycling in it with little or no brakes.

Not nice.

BTW, we received an email from out friends in Florida, I thought I'd enclose a couple of photos of the road by their house.

Dull, dark, windy, raining.

Other than that, it looks OK.

Hey Mick those photos of Florida were reminiscent of some of the stuff I was riding on/in yesterday.

its persisting it down here,a man(or woman for that matter)can only take so much :(

We had friends from New Zealand staying up until a week ago, they'd been cycle touring and camping up and down the country for 5 weeks.Brian said that the thing that got him down the most wasn't that it was raining a lot(wettest August on record I believe!) but that the skies were so grey everyday. He hit the nail squarely on the head.

If dearly beloved would agree I'd emigrate tomorrow, but the damned daughters keep producing children for us to fawn over so theres little chance :? .
