Car rack for a Toyota Yaris

Post by Bice »

I was thinking of having fitted a decent tow-bar, so I can reuse the excellent tow-bar bolted cycle rack that I had on my Volvo 940 (which has had to be scrapped because of Ulez).

But I am not sure whether it is worth fitting a tow-bar on this car. So I was thinking of one of those light racks that can take two bikes (not four), but which clip into the boot.

Any ideas of a good one?

NB there are several different generations of Yaris.

How about taking the car to Halfords and asking what would fit?

PS: I always fit a towbar and then use Pendle carriers.

I'd suggest a good one doesn't exist - If they are held by angled clips that fit on the edge of a panel (be it glass or steel) I wouldn't trust it. Putting a strap around everything and looping it inside so it forms a continuous stap and becomes a 'secondary, emergency strap'○might help, but I'd steer clear of these. It might be cheaper to have a tow bar than maybe lose the bikes and cause carnage or death in your rear-view mirror

A small trailer would be better -- you could store a good tent and camping equipment as well. We had a yaris but I'd say a bike would over hang the sides as it's a narrow car.

Have a look also at roof racks? You will get bars and a bike rack for the price of a towbar. I prefer the San Remo type racks which use the front dropouts, which als oare generally cheaper and less complicated.

Our yaris had a panoramic ( glass ) roof so if it's one the same it'll be hard to fit a bike rack on.

I was put off racks that clip to the tailgate. A friend smashed his rear window when he somehow nudged one of the loaded bikes against a post when reversing.
I had a tow bar fitted to our 2008 Yaris, very easy to clamp the rack onto the towball and very secure.

Seasucker. I bought one about five years ago, and it's been used on our previous car, present car, and I've loaned it to a couple of friends who've used it on their cars when going on holiday. I also bought the plugs so I can easily swap one or both sides of the rack from taking conventional dropouts to thru axle fork.

If you have a Yaris hybrid then tow bars are not advised - even if it’s for mounting a bike rack on. I’ve just acquired one and found out this limitation. There might issues with roadworthyness and insurance if that’s what the manufacturers are saying.

Check the specific Yaris for a trailer rating, without one, you can't tow anything.
A lot of small cars have no (or zero) trailer rating. ( As do a lot of electric cars ).

A zero-towing rated car may be able to have a bike-rack only towball fitted, as its not for towing. But check, as per the hybrid comment above about "not suitable" - it may depend on the specific year and specific model of the car.

Yes: it's essential to include model generation or model year in the check.
