Tyre alternatives please

Post by Pinhead »

I have ordered these for winter to swap for my Continental Double Fighters.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07GTJ832H? ... ct_details

I have two bikes, is there a better tyre YOU use personally for confidence for GRIP on wet roads, leaves, wet manhole/drain covers etc. Whatever make.

Thanks

I’m liking Schwalbe G one allround for mucky tarmac.
Bike fitting D.I.Y. .....http://wheel-easy.org.uk/wp-content/upl ... -2017a.pdf
Tracks in the Dales etc...http://www.flickr.com/photos/52358536@N06/collections/
Remember, anything you do (or don't do) to your bike can have safety implications

Those are "Continental Cross King Ii Performance 2.0".

(This will help with subsequent searching.)

There are many different properties of bike tyres, and I'd never choose on one alone.

We use Schwalbe Marathon Plus on the tourers, and don't experience inadequate grip on those surfaces.

Funnily enough similar comments were going through my mind, but maybe adding e-bike power (which the OP has) complicates the issue as does riding style - I’m generally fairly sedate / slow / cautious but ride over a broad range of surfaces. I like 700C Swalbe Landcruisers and Marathons work for me too, and when I’m on 27” wheels then Mitchelin World Tour worked/work just fine for me too.
Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

You've ordered them, then you ask?
I think you've made a mistake, the Double Fighters are better for the use you describe* than the tyres you've ordered, which would only be better in mud deep enough to need the spacing and depth of tread. I like Schwalbe Almotion, I've also used the Double Fighters, there's a good choice of others that would do just as well.

*Apart form the wet metalwork, no tyres grip on that.

Yes, the Cross King seems a strange choice for road use. High rolling resistance for no practical benefit, and possibly, if you pump them too up hard, practical dis-benefit.

Also, unless I’ve misunderstood, they seem to be a “tubeless ready” tyre, which often means thin-skinned, and probably quite a soft compound, which in turn means that if you run them with tubes you will get endless numbers of thorn punctures.

Personally, if running tubes, I would go for Continental Contact Plus (nice to ride) or Schwalbe Marathon GT365 (rather dead to ride), and if running tubeless then G1 Allrounds, for the application you describe.

OK so leave the double fighters on the second bike

I'll use these then here, 2 miles of mud/leaves

It does not look it but 3" mud, 12 wide and a hazard on the double fighters

I really must go into masses of intricate detail in future :(
There's no need for that much detail, or to be so rude, if you ask "Is there a better tyre" it's helpful to all to know better than what?
I thought the second part of your post had some relationship to the first, I misunderstood they were two separate subjects. The point remains the same, unless you're planning on riding some serious off road, you've ordered sup-optimal tyres.
Anyway, now you have more tyres than bikes, there's no need to trouble Amazon, put the DF's on the other bike, if they're better than it has already.
I MIS read your post hence I deleted it and thanked you immediately

If it's for use on less muddy paths, then I'd say yes.

In the OP:

“on wet roads, leaves, wet manhole/drain covers etc.”

In the pictures shown subsequently, a nice muddy bridleway.

Bit of a difference.

For the nice muddy bridleway, the knobbly ones you’ve chosen are good.

Road tyres not knobblies.
For the track pictured? Road tyres as well.
Go and look at gravel tyre reviews. Just a bit of tread if you really want some but those pictured will be hard work and if really off road biased may not be that robust.
