Is there an alternative to using a punch to remove the bearings from the freehub?

Do you mean the centre cone of a freewheel? It's a left hand thread btw so it unscrews clockwise. Never had a problem with using a punch.
If it is a freehub post a bit more info for what you are doing and the model and make.

Screwdrivers , sockets , anything that fits..

assuming your freehub is built like a campag one, there isn't a good alternative at present.

There are tools on eBay that lock into the two cutouts and are secured by a long bolt right through the hub.

I overhauled mine today, using the tool to remove that fitting, will post a picture of the tool tomorrow.

oh you mean a shimano-style hub,?? -I built myself a tool for that years ago and used it hundreds of times.....

I shouldn't laugh, I've actually put wheels in the wrong way round a couple of times. I note the rider also appears to have three legs, perhaps from the Isle of Man ?

The cup has two cutouts for the dogs of a TL-FH40, a very rare and expensive tool. Alternative tools that do the job better come with a long bolt, washers and a wingnut to stop it slipping.
