1/4 inch bearings in Quando Disc Hub - Worn Cones

Post by Brian73 »

I've bought a used Decathlon B'Twin Riverside 500 for my commuter.

The front hub felt really notchy so I stripped it for a re-grease.

The axle is a standard 9mm x 108mm but the ball bearings and cones are for 9x 1/4 inch in each side.

The cones are really pitted, but I cannot find a replacement with 1/4 inch bearing cones.

Rear cones are for a 10mm axle, so are too big to fit the 9mm axle

Does anybody know the model number of any front QR axles that have the correct cones to fit the 1/4 inch ball bearings?

TIA

Have you checked that the bearing cups in the hub are still smooth/not pitted. Often cones can be very bad but the cups still ok. This is not always the case though, so worth checking. If the cups in the hub are worn, then it is a new hub (wheel) time.
If you are not sure if a cup is worn (looks can be deceptive), I find scraping a sharp point (or thin screw driver) along the bearing track is a good test. If it feels rough/scratchy, it is worn, where as an unworn cup will feel smooth.
If you draw a blank, ask Decathlon, they can be very good with their own brand spares (but try not to get the part time Saturday lad when you ask), but you may well be less lucky as it is a Quando hub rather than Decathlon's own brand..

Is it worth finding out of the hub really takes 1/4" balls?, the previous owner might have put the wrong size balls in and ballsed it up. I've not looked, but such info might be on Quando's website.

Posting a photo of the cone(s) might help with this, if the wrong sized balls have been used, the bearing track will look (to some of us at least) in the wrong place.

One can dress up a worn cone by chucking up in a drill and using Emery to clean it up. Won't be perfect and may not be effective if it's badly pitted but can improve things.

It might be easiest to buy a new hub of the same type and strip it for parts. Saves rebuilding the wheel.

Was just about to post this - last one left, only £14.99. Seller is away until 31 Dec, though, so estimated delivery is 10 Jan at the earliest.

My Carrera Subway has these hubs. Haven't overhauled the front hub for a while but fairly sure it has 1/4 inch ball bearings, same as the rear.

If the cups are worn too then there’s a bigger problem. I’d be inclined to scrap the hub and rebuild the wheel but, on here, I have heard of people knocking out worn cups and replacing them from spares gleaned from other hubs of the same model. If such a ‘trick’ works for you then that’s potentially a lot of time, trouble and some expense saved.

A worn front hub is new to me, the rear ones go but the front’s have always been OK for me. I aim to put the right grease in ball bearing hubs, the ball is a point load and the grease must have the right oil in it to support (dissipate) that load.

1/4” balls in a front hub seems unusual to me, not saying it’s not so but rather that - like all things that aren’t quite standard - it’s something to double check. Things can be so by either design or some failure in QA …
Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

I refaced the hubs using a drill mounted in a vice and 400 grit wet / dry. Got most of the pitting out.

Seems to have done the job, I used an old set of ball bearings also as they seem to sit a bit higher up on the cone away from the pitting.

Seems to be running smooth enough for a commuter bike. They're going to get wet and gritty through winter anyway.

I have had a BMX with 1/4 inch balls in the front, but not a hybrid / road bike.

They are definitely built for 1/4 inch bearing cones, I tried a spare set of 3/16 bearing cones on the axle and there was a huge gap on the hub flange.

Given that these Decathlon wheels are absolute junk I'll source a better quality set in the summer.
