I have used an old Sony Experia android phone for my cycling satnav for several years. It cost me nothing and is normally very good.
But even though it is waterproof (ip68 down to 1.5m) it's screen reacts to rain droplets and that makes it difficult to use during a shower. So I carry a bag to enclose it and keep the screen dry when the weather is wet.
Last year whilst cycling in particularly heavy rain in the Alps the bag failed to keep the screen dry and I lost control of the phone and the Satnav. I ended up just following another couple of cyclists as even my backup map became soaked and unusable.
I just wondered if there was a way to "lock" the screen; making the screen unresponsive to touch whilst still using my Satnav app.
May there is an app somewhere that can do this ?
Android phone screen and rain drops
Re: Android phone screen and rain drops
Android phones have a lock screen feature in their settings. Check for "lock screen" under the security section. You generally have three or four ways of locking the screen and these will be itemised and explained. I'm not sure when this feature was added to the Android platform. You may not have it if the phone precedes this.

Is that an ordinary bag? How about a waterproof case designed for the job?

But that doesnt allow you to view a running satnav app - its simply a security feature AFAIKEyebrox wrote: ↑3 Jan 2024, 9:06pm Android phones have a lock screen feature in their settings. Ive tried both. The trouble with even waterproof bags designed for swimming etc is that you get condensation and when the damp inner bag surface touches the screen it activates the screen.
Re: Android phone screen and rain drops
I obtained the help of my daughter and her boyfriend tonight and after the three of us trialled various apps for most of the evening we came upon the almost perfect solution for me.
It doesnt work on my usual Motorola G82 phone which is running Android 13, which is why I couldn't find it in Google playstore. But it does work on my old Sony Experia satnav phone which has Android 9.
"Touch Protector" app

Its free and has no ads.

I do deliveries and rely on the phone both for incoming jobs and navigation. I haven't found the perfect solution, though the Quad Lock Poncho is the best I've tried. For navigations, I find it better to use voice commands and bone conducting headphones, but for other functions I need the visual and the ability to swipe.

And by clicking "Show More" on this page https://apkpure.com/touch-protector/biz ... r/versions there are versions of the app which will work with something really old, running as back-in-time an OS as Jellybean, or Android 4.2.Jules59 wrote: ↑4 Jan 2024, 12:27am I obtained the help of my daughter and her boyfriend tonight and after the three of us trialled various apps for most of the evening we came upon the almost perfect solution for me.

I sometimes navigate with an ancient but tough and small Samsung S4 mini (works well, great screen, battery can be replaced in seconds) which I think runs Android 4.4, so will give this app a trial - thanks.

There is this Fahrer pouch that works well:

especially in combination with their holder.

I think this is the reason my bike navi (Teasi) does not have a capacitive touch sensor but a pressure-sensitive resistive type. It is nowhere near as sensitive as a smartphone but it works just the same in the rain as in the dry.
I suspect this problem is insoluble with consumer smartphones. The physics is against you.
What about a small dedicated navigation device that uses the smartphone for most of the background processing? I've seen these, forget where right now and it's teatime so you'll have to look yourself.

I am NOT a cyclist. I enjoy riding a bike for utility, commuting, fitness and touring on tout terrain Rohloff, Brompton ML3 (2004) and Wester Ross 354 plus a Burley Travoy trailer.
