Halfords discount again!

Post by carlislemike »

I want to buy either traditional bike racks for a rooftop carrier or a Saris Bones. As they are cycling specific do I buy from Halfords and do I get the discount for cycling accessories or do I look elsewhere?

I'd check explicitly.

Seems to me the Halfords discount is hardly worth bothering with anymore.

I've always found Halfords discounts a bit opaque, particularly their bargain bin stuff. They have a prominent REDUCED label, but don't display the original price, necessitating a great search of the store to find how much is being "saved". Not very much, generally.

I'd be very surprised if Brompton bikes are reduced - that just doesn't happen does it?

I managed to get £100 off my Brompton at Rutland Cycles. It was a special offer of 10% discount, but they agreed that it did apply to a Brompton.

Looked up the prices for brompton -- that's a bit mad for a fold up bike.

They wouldn't be a huge success unless a lot of people considered them worth it.
I have the base model, I managed to get a discount via a Halfords Gift Card, a loophole that's been closed. Currently they're £950.
I hardly ever use mine, I don't really like it, though it's the only bike I can be sure of getting on a bus or taxi, so every time I do it saves me between £8 - £20 and a lot of inconvenience.

Is it heavy or awkward to carry on a bus ?

I am genuinely interested. I have a wee Raleigh ' swift ' 20" folder I think it's called -- again hardly ever use it but it's been on the train with me though it might get refused on a bus. Cost about £150 at the time on offer about 10 years ago -- I think the new equivalent ones are about £250 or £300 -- I had two but sold one about 6 years ago for £60 on gumtree -- the guy was glad to get it. Maybe I understand why now.

I'm getting old -- looked up prices of "cheap" folding bikes -- a Raleigh is £400  no wonder their in trouble.

I find it fine, but it isn't lightweight. Three thing in it's favour - It's so easy to fold you don't have to do it in advance, so it doesn't get carried far. Then it can be wheeled when folded, again minimising the distance carried. Lastly although it's quite heavy, it's also compact so it's a lot easier to carry than the Dahon I had which was about the same weight. As well as the carrying, the size means it fits in the luggage space on most buses and trains.

If you're commuting with a bike or using a folder very frequently on trains and buses then a Brompton is the best bet. If it's for infrequent use then one of the 20" wheel folders is better, they generally cost less and are nicer to ride. I've two folders, a Brompton and a Dahon Speed TR. The latter has 24 gears with Sram Dual drive, 20 x 2 Schwalbe Big Apple tyres, Magura hydraulic rim brakes etc and is generally much the better to ride.
A few years ago I met a chap at Mildenhall rally with a Speed TR and he'd use to tour through much of South America without any problems , either mechanical or comfort related.

If you use a folder infrequently stay faithful to your Raleigh.

Never had a refusal when taking my old Raleigh Twenty Stowaway on the bus. I bungee it to the rail in the pushchair storage area to stop it running away.
