Water Bottle Smashed in Two
Water Bottle Smashed in Two
Hi all
I lost my water bottle from the cage on my bike while going downhill - when I went back to get it - it had shattered into two parts.
Has this ever happened to anyone else?
Cheers in advance.

Re: Water Bottle Smashed in Two
What's it made of? And how cold was it?
Thanks

Re: Water Bottle Smashed in Two
Zefal Magnum (not sure of material) about 3 or 4 degrees.

Material was Polypropylene.

Re: Water Bottle Smashed in Two
I've got several of these bottles, I'll try not to drop them just now
"But many plastics exhibit their transition at everyday temperatures and can be “frozen” into brittleness. One example: polypropylene, an inexpensive material often used in containers, toys, outdoor furniture, and recycling bins has a Tg of between -20 and 0 degrees C, so it can easily lose its molecular mobility and become shatter-prone on a winter day." https://engineering.mit.edu/engage/ask- ... -get-cold/

Re: Water Bottle Smashed in Two
i had an almost emp[ty alpkit bottle that I dropped recently and was surprised when it split along its whole length rather than just bounce. Was a little bit annoyed as it was brand new, and came with a cap to keep the mud off the spout. i would expect an older one may go more brittle with UV exposure etc. Not the end of the world i suppose as it was only a couple of quid and i only added it to my internet order of something else because it was on sale so cheap.

On a 5 month tour in 1972 I took a glass bottle !!Blissful ignorance of youth
Re: Water Bottle Smashed in Two
Any tips (apart from bending the cage slightly to make a tighter fit) to reduce the risk.
Perhaps some type of grippy tape on the cage itself?

Re: Water Bottle Smashed in Two
I've had two bottles split during rides. They were getting on a bit so I put it down to fatigue from being flexed.
Have we got time for another cuppa?
Re: Water Bottle Smashed in Two
An old-fashioned toe-strap is ideal.
A stainless-steel flask is handy for a hot drink too. Smaller Thermos flasks around 500ml will fit a standard bottle cage, but will need a strap to stop them rattling around

Or just a metal bottle, eg https://www.halfords.com/seasonal/healt ... 14022.html
(aluminium, 750ml, £12.50)
I've never had a bottle smash in two but I've had at least one (plastic) leak along the moulding line.

I think a toe strap imo would be a bit fiddly when riding…

Horses and courses, but I'll stop to drink, have a stretch and enjoy the view
