Aren't "narrow/wide" chainrings designed to fit regular chains?
The gap between the outer sideplates is forced to be bigger than the gap between inner side plates?

PH makes a good point: check your chain is long enough to accomodate the increase in chainring teeth by 2t. You can do this by shifting onto the biggest gear and seeing how much slack you have.
These direct mount chainrings are very specific to the cranks (and I guess narrow-wide chain?) I assume your mate has the exact same type of drivetrain as your bike?
