Brittany May 2024

Have booked a ferry Plymouth to Roscoff for me and my bike in early May. I’ll arrive in Roscoff at 8pm and leave a week later at 1.20pm giving me 6 days full days of riding. Looking for ideas and recommendations for where to go please. I’m thinking of camping, nothing too hilly and up to about 50 miles/80 km per day. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for this suggestion for a loop. Do you have or can you direct me to GPS files for the route?

If you go to that page, make the map full screen you'll see an option on the drop-down menu to save as a KML file. However that said I'd follow the written instructions and get a Michelin 1.200.000 map. It may seem old fashioned, but I don't like GPS, you lose the feeling of passing through a wider landscape - but that's just me;-)
If you need advice on how to do the KML stuff this vid works from 7:00 onwards.

Thanks again. I’ve ordered some paper maps and also downloaded the KLM file. I’m now thinking I’ll start by going east from Roscoff along the coast. More precise plans to be developed once I get the maps and look at where campsites and velo routes are.

Great - I'd buy a copy of this too - it gives all the campsites so you won't miss out on some little jem tucked away somewhere - frequently not on Google or other guides.

That link doesn’t seem to work. But found it on Amazon anyway.

Thanks for the heads up - I'll have to renew my links, but it is essential;-)

Have been studying the maps and I’m now looking at following Eurovelo 4 from Roscoff up around the coast. When I get to Treguier the plan is to divert north eastwards to Pleubian and do a loop around that peninsula following a 24k route suggested in Lonely Planet’s book “Best Bike Rides France”. On the way back to Roscoff, I’ll cut some corners off by going directly from Pleubian to Lannion.
Does anyone know this northern Brittany coastal route? Too touristy? It will be early May. Is finding campsites going to be ok? I’m hoping to keep it flexible.

Campsites might not be all that easy- I didn’t camp last year but chatted to other cyclists who had difficulty in the coast in early June. Funnily enough inland might be easier as they are catering to a different market to the traditional coastal campers. Also - b and bs not cheap in that area. I expect the camping will be ok if you plan ahead and maybe focus on ones catering partly to camper vans.

Wasn’t too touristy when I went a few years ago. It was Easter I think. Sorry, I can’t remember my exact route but I really enjoyed it. Hope you do too!

Depends on what you mean by touristy. You'll find lots of nice eateries, and if the weather has been good, lots of visiting yachts. There are some steep climbs in some areas.

I’m slightly anxious about the match between lb’s request for ‘nothing too hilly’ and the notion of tackling routes that take in coastal roads, as in my experience the north west can be very up-and-down. However by using the usual online route planners, such as cycle.travel etc, it’s possible to take a look at the route profile well in advance.

I think this post was meant for a different thread?
