Campag compatibility

Post by Mister W »

Tricky question for all you clever people......

My GF's road bike has Veloce shifters that are a couple of years old. She needs a new front mech but all of the Campag mechs are now "QS" and appear to be designed to work with the new QS shifters. So...... will a new QS front mech work with older shifters?

Thank you :)

Yes.

Older (than one-year-old) Veloce Ergopowers don't index the front shift, so any front mech can be used with them.

In a few year's time those Veloce Ergos will be worth more than new ones, since they provide one of the few good ways of combining dropped handlebars with really low, i.e. mountain-bike, gearing that most tourists want.

Although it's about a month to soon to be sure, from what I understand the Escape mechanism has been dropped from Centaur and Veloce Ergos so the new levers will once again be non indexed on the front.

there is a choice of both types of shifting on the 09 ergos but its only mentioned in the wholesale docs so far. they are lighter than the older designs with a firmer feel to the lever and the cushioned lever hood and adjustment on reach is a nice touch, but i recon they are a bit weak in some areas. they are a fussy fit on non-round bars which resulted in breaking the alloy securing a/key bolts a few times and the edges of the leverhoods are a bit thin so tear easily.
