SP PV8 Dynohub Maintenance?

Post by Mick F »

I have an SP PV8 Dynohub on my Moulton.
The bike is in bits at the moment undergoing deep cleaning and maintenance.

Is it possible to grease and check the bearings?

Searched this forum, and found this.

The Youtube link is pointless for me.
There isn't a nut to undo, being a rim brake model and with a QR.

Seems like there's a sort of nut on one end. Both end bosses are basically round, but it has a single flat on one.
Looks like it needs a special tool to undo it as a spanner wouldn't work. Dunno how you would hold the other end.

I'll check again tomorrow and maybe take a photo or two to illustrate.

It's like much this one, but 100mm OLN.

I rebuilt mine with new bearings. Searching online there were many editions. Some with end collars which screwed on hence the flats. Mine were pressed on and needed a puller to remove. Once pulled off you can prise the seal off the bearings and regrease.

I didn't have a puller so improvised with a clamp and a hammer to drive the shaft through the collar.

There's also this discussion from 2021:

which includes the distributor's service options and a link to this strip-down blog:

Good morning guys.

Thanks for the interesting and informative links.
No, it doesn't have Allen holes on the axle.

I prefer to do preventative maintenance, and not breakdown maintenance.
There's nothing wrong with the hub, I just wanted to be able to inject grease or at least have a look-see.

Unless and until it's knackered, I won't be touching it. Even then, it would be easier to buy a new one.

I think that all hubs with a trapped volume (including SP dynohubs) should be vented so that they 'breathe' properly.
