Pannier Rack Tubing

The pannier rack on the back of my bike has the fat type of tubing which I assume is aluminium. Neither of my sets panniers clip onto it properly as the clips don't open wide enough.

Is there a work round solution to this or an adapter that can be used? Unless my panniers are weighted the clip pops off the tubing each time I hit a bump. Thanks.

What's the diameter of the tubing?

And what make are the panniers? And please add a photo of the clips and how they are attached.

The tubing is 10 mm across by 20 mm high if that helps?

That appears to be a Rixen & Kaul fitting system and these are likely to be the right oversize hooks

It looks like that's the problem.

The makers of the panniers expected the tubing to be round, and the extra depth is stopping the silver anti-jump catches either side of the red button from popping out under the bottom of the tubing.

Most pannier makers will be working on the basis of round tubing, so I'd suggest a new rack is the best option.

100 % this is what is happening. The tubing is oval as opposed to round. I think a new rack might be the easiest solution. Thanks.

Some of the hooks used on Basil panniers cope with some oval racks but I doubt it would be as deep as 20mm. What an odd rack!

You may like to check any new rack has a rear low triangle to stop panniers twisting into the mudguard stays, as in https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/carriers-ra ... ring-clip/

Ok I made a work round.

About 2 inches below the platform level of my pannier rack was another horizontal bar that was round and 10 mm tubing. My bag clicked perfectly into place on it, but that then meant that the lower retaining clip on the bag was too low. So, I have moved that up and it works perfectly. I covered the original drill holes in bag with 3 small inner tube patches.

Not sure it's a work around. The lower round rails are probably for panniers. The upper oval is the rack platform and for things on it. Glad you could adjust the anti sway catch.

Re odd design, the rack on my Brompton is square (or oblong). It's a pain as pannier hooks won't fit (not that panniers do very well).
