Shimano freehub compatability

Post by palebluepebble »

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me. My freehub has given up the ghost and needs replacing. It is a Shimano FH-M525A. I only really need the freehub body as the rest of the hub/wheel is okay. It doesn't appear that this is still produced so I was wondering are other freehubs compatible with this? If so, how would I know that they are compatible?

Sorry, I'm a bit of a beginner with all of this but keen to learn/understand!

Thanks for any help you're able to give

This is really useful thank you. I guess I'm wondering how the compatability works? For example, is it obvious that the m595 would fit? And would this be the same for any Shimano hub(e.g. m756a?).

I didn't know if there was an easy way to check?

Read this thread before you replace it. It could just need a clean, reshim and oil.

I'd read this thread if you haven't already, lots of info there on these very subjects.

I've changed a few freehubs over the years using what ever was available and thought to be the most economical. A couple of times I have bought a complete hub and just used the freehub part.
Even purchasing an MTB hub and using the freehub on a Road hub.
My latest freehub change came about because I upgraded to 11 speed so purchased an 11 speed complete hub with the intention of just swapping over the freehub.
This was thwarted because the "star" hole (don't know the proper name) did not match. (different size) So I ended up changing the complete hub. This has been the only time I couldn't just swap out the freehub due the "star" being a different size. So if the "star" matches then I presume the freehub will just swap over.

This is really useful and is what I had been wondering - thank you. I've taken apart and serviced the freehub (more for the exercise than anything), and not confident the pawls are up to continuing. I will likely pick up a replacement.

Does anyone know what the 'star' hole is called for reference? *And do different 'star' shapes have different names?

it is more commonly known as a splined interface but I have also heard it referred to a 'pastrycutter' interface.

More info on variants here, viewtopic.php?p=1439944&hilit=freehub+s ... 4#p1439944
